A sampler of late 80s direct-to-video trash.

Warning: Spoilers
Part three in this four-part video series runs about an hour and was produced by B-movie queen Brinke Stevens. Stevens is also credited here as the "hostess" though she never actually appears on screen in any new footage and simply reads off the five chapter headings and that't that. The credited director is "Lance Randas" (aka J.R. Bookwalter), whose duties as "director" were clearly limited to editing since this is little more than a bunch of recycled clips. Unlike the first two SHOCK CINEMA entries, this features no interviews with B-movie filmmakers and actors. Instead, we simply get scenes from seven films divided into categories such as "T&A," "Blood & Gore," "Trailers," "Bloopers" and "Action & Special Effects." Over half of the feature films shown; the campy horror comedy NIGHTMARE SISTERS (1987), the fun sci-fi comedy DR. ALIEN (1989), the early erotic thriller DEADLY EMBRACE (1989) and the bizarre slasher/gore flick MURDER WEAPON (1989) were directed by David DeCoteau. The other three - GHOUL SCHOOL (1990), ROBOT NINJA (1989) and SKINNED ALIVE (1990) - were Tempe releases.

If you haven't seen most of the above movies, you'll probably enjoy the sleazy and gory clips shown here. If you have seen most of the movies, this is basically a waste of your time. The T&A section is loaded with nude scenes from Stevens and her Scream Queens sisters Linnea Quigley and Michelle Bauer (as well as a few other actresses) and the gore section showcases some pretty cheap/fun special effects. What is of most interest here is the bloopers section, which features loads of outtakes from both NIGHTMARE SISTERS and DR. ALIEN. While the same blooper reel for the former can be found on the Retromedia DVD release, the blooper reel for the latter is not a feature on its Full Moon DVD release. To my knowledge this is the only place you can see them.

Originally released to VHS by Cinema Home Video, the entire series is now being distributed on DVD by Tempe Entertainment, who have added a trailer for the (very good) 2003 documentary SOMETHING TO SCREAM ABOUT to it.

The best of the Shock Cinema series.

This has some funny bloopers, especially the outtakes from Doctor Alien. It even shows the original Robot Ninja trailer, which is about 4 minutes long! Goofy stuff, and there's some funny outtakes from Nightmare Sisters. I've seen this one about 3 or 4 times and even a few of my friends liked it. Hey, sometimes the bloopers can be funnier than the films themselves, but I haven't seen either Dr. Alien or Nightmare Sisters. So I'm not sure, but the behind-the-scenes material is sure enjoyable. I highly recommend this for fans of b-cinema, scream queens, and gore film lovers.
