"Three Stories"
angolo11 April 2001
Summary: In wealthy Milano (Italy) hinterland sensitive Paolo works as a car dealer, romantic Martina is jobless, and strong Giovanni loves working in the fields and with farm animals. They share in common a "deadly friend", Heroin. Not only, they also share the will to overcome their addiction. They meet each other in one of the many rehab communities which is characterized by being "autogestita" (self-managed). This touching movie crops up from a documentary that showed on Italian television and the actors actually play themselves. The audience is lead progressively into the personal life of each of the characters in addition to that of Wolf (a fourth character).

I personally think that the movie is a valuable sneak into the world of drug addiction and rehabilitation which gives a human dimension to the addicts. These are people which are neither "victims" of the "bad drug dealers" (which happen to be themselves sometimes) nor "lost generation heroes" (this is no Trainspotting) with a clear (but conflictual) understanding of their situation. The philosophical theme is that of Life as a love/hate relationship with Death.

The movie is in Italian, and shows in the US with UK-English subtitles. Most of the dialogues are well rendered, besides some jokes and play on words that are hard to transliterate.
