Andrew Garfield, Mahershala Ali, Ruth Negga, and five others received their first-ever acting nominations for 2017. While these actors are new to the Academy Awards, you may recognize them from their earlier work.
This little piece of modest South American exploitation is an Hispanic combination of Mark of the Devil and House of Whipcord. A group of religious enthusiasts operating out of (as always) a Gothique castle are determined to destroy satanists, diabolists and sinful women when they find them.
In fact they are pretty much targeting only women. Good looking ones too. Can't help but get the feeling that they enjoy what they do too.
Anyway, they combine this ecclesiastical zeal with modest scenes of torture and violence. This is strictly a category B movie in that regard- topless exposure, but not full frontal, and most of the death scenes are seen only in aftermath.
So this counts as interesting rather than a wonderful addition to the genre. Doubtless someone will pick it up for DVD release ....
