Construction manager Frans van Steendenern is left by his adulterous wife Jany, who moves to Australia with her lover Thijs in 1957. Ten years later Frans decides to send his 18 year old son Arie to a boarding school. Arie only agrees to go if he can visit his mother down under after graduating.
Arie has trouble fitting in at the boarding school and prefers staying to himself. His request to have his horse brought to the school is denied, despite his father's generous payment. He meets a girl his age called Cootje while cycling and gets his friend Dicky to ask invite to the school dance for him.
Frans and Arie have finally bonded during their stay in Switserland. Just before they arrive back, Arie's mother unexpectedly arrives home from Perth to take Arie back with her. Cootje comes to visit Arie and is impressed by his father's wealth.
Arie has been wandering through the woods all night after catching his father sleeping with his estranged wife. After sitting up worrying all night, the next day Frans gets a heart attack at his work. this leads his mother to visit Jany at her hotel to tell her about Fans and ask her to return to Australia
Arie dumps Cootje because he doesn't believe in love any more. Marie leaves Frans after realizing she cannot compete with Jany. Back at boarding school, Arie gets a new roommate, the 'Spanish bartender' Jan. Arch rivals Jany and Marie bump into each other in a brand new supermarket.
Frans' coworkers have put on a little show to celebrate his 20th anniversary, but afterward he has a fatal heart attack at home in the kitchen. Now it is up to Janny to do his look after his interests in the construction business. Meanwhile Arie has developed feelings for Els and for her sake is helping Erik to study for his exam. Jan thinks Erik and Arie are both homosexuals and provokes a fight with Arie.
Jany wants to sell the house and all the stocks in her late husbands company. Arie must decide what to do with the rest of his life. Konings proposes a job tending horses, while Schellekens wants to set up a small construction company, just like Arie's father did when he was young.
