One Step Ahead

Good attempt that almost works

At the time of writing this, there were already two other reviews posted for SAMPLE PEOPLE - one loved it, the other thought it was try-hard rubbish. I can see both points of view, which is probably why I saw SAMPLE PEOPLE as being of average quality, with some terrific characterisations (and performances) but a rather meandering plot. Having grown up in Adelaide (the city of churches...), this slice of Sydney nightlife appears almost other-worldly, though I did spend a week in Sydney last year and there's probably more truth than untruth in the film. Top-billed Kylie Minogue is just an audience-grabber - the real story revolves around others, including Ben Mendelsohn, who is delightful (is that the right word?) as a bisexual who is continually falling victim to poofter-bashing (sorry, "ill-directed homophobic assaults" for our American couterparts). While it's aimed at the youth nightclub culture, I doubt whether many of that group would enjoy this one (at least in Adelaide) - this is probably why it wasn't successful at the box-office (I gather it was only released in art-houses anyway). If you get a chance, see SAMPLE PEOPLE (I agree, great title), and make up your own mind. 6/10
