Okay remake of a Stooges short
2 April 2017 | by (Chicora, Pennsylvania) – See all my reviews

From 1949 until 1956, Joe Besser made 10 two-reel comedies for Columbia Pictures before he was assigned to be the third stooge for the famous trio's final series of comedy shorts. Most of the output was mostly army comedies, but this short is a scene-by-scene copy of the 1943 Stooges short DIZZY DETECTIVES. Besser is paired with radio comedian Jim Hawthorne, who was hired by Jules White as a comic sidekick for a few of Besser's two-reelers.

They play detectives who are told by their boss (Tom Kennedy) to guard an antique store late at night to prevent a trained gorilla from robbing the place. They eventually have a run-in with two thieves who are planning to rob the place themselves.

This short would be remade again a few years later, as HOOK A CROOK with a new plot and even new footage featuring Dudley Dickerson as a janitor. Hawthorne would team up with Besser again in AIM, FIRE, SCOOT!, a remake, of sorts, of the Stooges' classic BOOBS IN ARMS.
