Half decent TV series that cover a whole range of topics, mainly those of science and morality. Do robots have a soul? Some very interesting side stories apart from the main Knight Saber fights (the wife cheating episode sticks to mind) to some very long drawn out battles towards the end of the series (Knight Sabers versus Galatea).
It's Tokyo in 2040, seven years after the huge earthquake that devastated the metropolis. Boomer technology used by Genom to make the new Tokyo are now a nuisance to some humans and treat them horribly. But these Boomers have a tendency to go 'mad' and Genom enlists the AD Police to fix the problem. Unfortunately, the AD Police have to get there before the Knight Sabers do; a rogue squadron of Boomer haters that destroy the mad ones.
Later on in the series, the whole idea of fusion takes the whole story further by leaps and bounds and the story, though sped up really fast, maintains an episodic feel so no one feels too lost. The character growth is done well and overall, BUBBLEGUM CRISIS: TOKYO 2040 is a good and most needed update to a cult classic anime.
