While filming a movie in the back woods of New England, temperamental Hollywood actress Sydney Clarke abruptly walks off the set because of problems she sees in filming, and because she catches her professional and personal leading man, Ryan Steele, in the arms of another woman. Wandering, she ends up in a small one industry town called Lincoln, whose existence is solely because of the local steel mill. Needing time to think about life especially in wanting to make more of a difference in the world than just being a movie actress, she decides to stay in Lincoln temporarily, incognito under her real name, Cheryl Belson. With no money in her pockets, Cheryl is taken under the sympathetic wing of local bowling alley waitress, Joyce McMurphy. Cheryl also attracts the attention of Ben Cameron, the manager of the mill, who is hiding to his friends and colleagues the dire strait in which the mill is. Cheryl quickly becomes ensconced in the town's life, but that may be short lived if she decides to return to her life as Sydney Clarke and/or if the mill closes.
