Storyline

Matej and Jenda, two of the eight children of the poor Pelc family in the Giant Mountains, help in a glass works where the oldest brother Francek works. They hide into a tub not to be seen by supervisors checking on the ban of children labor. They miss the Epiphany carol (songs and treats door-to-door) and all neighbor village boys again on them in all the neighbor houses. On their way home they are passed by a fast moving big man with a large backpack. The boys send the customs officers, who are pursuing the strange man, to the opposite direction. The man then thanks them and rewards them the next day. Based on fairy-tales and legends the boys think the man is Krakonos (the giant living and ruling in the Giant Mountains). Written by NFA.cz

A sweet and sunny movie full of snow - what happens when Ski arrives in the small village deep in Krkonose hills.
2 January 2005 | by (Czech Republic) – See all my reviews

This one and one-half hour long story takes us to the Krkonose in the middle of the tough winter. People who live there have their habits which are linked with a story about Krakonos - a good spirit of the hills, who protects innocent and punishes the evil ones. The life here is tough and people survives here only with the help of smugglers, who brings them food and proprieties vital for survival. Here, in the distant cottage, there live two boys with their numerous family, who believe in Krakonos so much, that they worship him at every their step. One day they see a Ski - new invention in the transport way and they immediately love it. They must have it at all costs. The story tells us how they steal the Ski which belongs to their teacher, thinking they were gifted by Krakonos, about relationship between them and another troop of boys, about fear from punishment and about never-ending hunt on smuggler, who uses Ski to escape the police every time and mainly about life of all the people in the hills. The movie illustrates beautiful landscape with such poetry, and the whole movie is full of feeling of no evil - there is no evil character at all - even the police. Everybody just tries to survive in hostile environment. The whole movie is a beautiful story - mostly a fairy tail and it is suitable for everybody - not depending on his age. I can recommend it to everyone who wants to see a soft, sunny movie full of snow and beauty of winter in the hills. And for Christmas time it is essential.
