Reginald Hill won an award for this one

I read the book after I saw this episode. In general I watch every crime series, especially the British police dramas. Unfortunately, I haven't seen the first few "Dalziel and Pascoe" episodes. I think this has to be my favourite, though. Dalziel and Pascoe are investigating a murder that Dalziel was a witness to, in a way, and at the same time, trying to work out who is sending Dalziel letters about an intended suicide. This is a very clever episode, and had me guessing right up to the end, and even that was totally unpredictable. That's what I love about the series. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in murder mysteries, especially if you enjoyed "Murder Call."

A contender for show's best episode.

Andy hears a disturbance, and runs to investigate, he discovers one dead woman, and two men, both claim that she shot herself, but are they lying?

In terms of books, this is the best of the Reginald Hill novels, it's tremendous, there is a depth and cleverness worthy of.......dare I say it, Colin Dexter.

Bones and Silence is a classy, thought provoking mystery, there is so much going on, so many events, it could easily have felt disjointed, but it's tightly woven, cohesive and although complex, it's easy to follow.

We have the play, the letters, the deaths, the disappearance, it has some real quality.

The music is more Lewis/Morse, again it adds a great deal.

There are two standout performances, firstly, the eternal Josette Simon, who's excellent as Eileen, her story was quite something, and the highlight, Michael Kitchen, what can you say, show's standout performance? It's a real acting masterclass from the soon to be DI Foyle, it doesn't get much better than this.

Warren Clarke is tremendous, one of his best performances, he really made the character his own.

9/10.

The best item in the Dalziel & Pascoe series

Detective Dalziel is busy being sick in a bucket. Raising his head, he sees a movement in a neighbour's window and could swear he is witnessing a murder. Is it the string of double whiskys playing games with his eyes, or is it for real and if so, who is the murderer and who is the victim? Reginald Hill's first novel, A Clubbable Woman, published in 1970, also became a TV hit. Hill wrote over 50 books that range from historical novels to science fiction. He received the 1990 Golden Dagger Award for Best Crime Novel of the Year for Bones and Silence and the 1995 Cartier Diamond Dagger Award for lifetime achievement.

Bizarre & Incredible

Warning: Spoilers
I like this TV series, but it gets too weird sometimes, and also the pace goes very slowly. By comparison Midsomer Murders usually has a fast pace and a lot of witty dialogue. In DL & Paskoe, the focus is too often on DL creeping people out by hitting on suspects and witnesses, and constantly drinking on the job. Paskoe is great, but his wife Ellie gets too much time, and she is always either meddling or else she is involved in some off-the-wall project.

In this episode, Ellie is suddenly not teaching anymore, and has become the project manager / promoter for some bizarre artist played by Josette Simon. Simon hosts performance art plays. She also secretly wants to commit suicide and keeps sending suicide letters to DL. So alot of time is spent on Ellie Paskoe, her relationship with Ms. Simon, and the performance of a play inside a church.

The main story is about Roger Swain, the alleged killer of his wife and others. DL saw him kill a woman, but there is a witness that claims it was an accident. The Roger Swain story is really all about DL pursuing a personal vendetta. The story ends with ridiculous revelations of multiple murders. Swain goes from evil genius to Nancy Chatterbox in the blink of an eye.

Even more ridiculous is where all the bodies are hidden. Consider that an entire staff of construction workers would have had to see the bodies, laid them out in their sections, and worked together to pour concrete over them. They all had to be laid out at the same time out in the open, probably for an entire day or more, while the parking lot was properly boxed in for the concrete. You could not pour concrete over them one body at a time, since the entire parking lot was being renovated.
