Thursday’s episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race reminded the Met Gala how camp is really done with a sickening series of soap-worthy slaps, gag-worthy returns and, of course, wigs on wigs on wigs.
The episode began innocently enough, with Ru challenging the queens to slap the crap out of one another for a fabulous monetary prize. And while some slaps looked more like awkward karate chops, the queens did Joan Collins proud — especially Canada’s sweetheart Brooke Lynn Hytes, who won the competition with a bite just as fierce as her bark.
That’s when s–t got real.

The Netflix millennial coming-of-age dramedy sets Brie Larson as a storyteller to watch both in front of and behind the camera.
Brie Larson's directorial debut, Unicorn Store, is a coming-of-age film for a generation that is "coming of age" later and for longer than generations before. It is a sympathetic exploration of the "Peter Pan Syndrome" firmly placed in the millennial experience, and without the judgmental undertones (and sometimes overtones) of films with a similar subject matter but far less empathy for the contemporary young adult experience.
While The Verge calls Unicorn Store "an odd companion piece to Captain Marvel," in part because of the Brie Larson/Samuel L. Jackson reunion, the Netflix film pairs much better with 2012's indie Safety Not Guaranteed or 2004's 13 Going On 30, aka coming-of-age dramedies with a magical surrealist bend. If you're looking to make an event of it, Unicorn Store also pairs well with Pop Tarts,...

For those of you who grew up with a little Rainbow Brite in your life, you'll be happy to learn that the classic colorful character will be making a comeback! The new comic series is being developed by Dynamite Entertainment and Hallmark and it's said to be an adventure that children and adults will enjoy.
The comic will be created by writer Jeremy Whitley and artist Brittney Williams. Whitley had this to say in a statement:
“Rainbow Brite captured the imaginations of kids born in the '80s (like myself) as a fantasy heroine who could change the world not just through magic, but through kindness. She is a symbol of what can happen when we all work together and fight back against the shadows that want to drain all of the color from the world."The world needs a young hero clad in a rainbow now more than ever...

As the My Little Pony movie plays in cinemas, why there's lots going on behind the bright colours...
A spoiler for The Never Ending Story lies ahead.
My Little Pony fans have a tough ride. There’s a sweet spot for pre-teen girls where it’s just about socially acceptable to love the brightly coloured dream-horses, but after that, you start to get sideways looks when you walk slightly too slowly down the toy aisle in Tesco. Trust me, I know.
Male fans have it even worse, with any interest assumed to be sexual – either an indication of homosexuality or a cartoon bestiality fetish with disturbingly paedophilic overtones. Such a gendered reaction to a show featuring six female protagonists that preaches acceptance and love is an unfortunate reflection of toxic masculinity seeping into all stages of life. It’s sad that, to some, these conclusions are more...

Like many of you, I grew up in a time when cereal companies would put actual prizes in cereal boxes. I used to love buying cereal with prizes and I remember going home and digging through the box so that I could get my hands on it! It’s sad that kids these days will never know the awesomeness of that experience! Now they provide you with a code that you have to input on a web site just to enter to get the prize, and most of the time it’s not even guaranteed. I guess it's easier than some of the toys you had to mail in for back in the day!
I was telling my kids about the prizes I used to get recently and it fascinated them. So I started searching online to see if I could find some of the things I remember getting from...

Here's a crazy and weird mashup that I never thought I'd see! We have a set of character art created by Rage Gear Studios in which they transformed several X-Men superheroes into characters from classic '80s cartoon Rainbow Brite. The character mashups included here are Dazzle Bright, Lemon Lee, Mean Mean Tangerine, Roguey D/Mint, Scarlett O'Hex, Ice Blue, Psy Violet, Indigo Beau, Stormy, Remy Le Rose, and Moon Crawler. I never watched Rainbow Brite, but of course I'm familiar with it and it's fun to see the X-Men all decked out with ridiculous cuteness.

Every once in a while, we’re gifted with a film that makes a mockery of genre classifications, and at this year’s South by Southwest film festival, that movie was Turbo Kid. There’s no realistic way to classify the creative genius on display throughout said wonderpiece, but hell, I’ll give it a try anyway!
This dreamlike fantasy mixes a sweet, coming-of-age love story with the energy of a psychedelic music video and the practical goriness of the most splatterific 80s horror movie you can reference. It’s whimsical, gleefully brutal, and utterly breathtaking. It’s the type of movie that shouldn’t make you so damn happy, but it’s impossible not to be sucked in by the magnificent design and screen-popping colors on display. Turbo Kid is an independent miracle that exists outside of a mainstream system unwilling to take such artistic risks, but without individuals...

Miley Cyrus sure loves her wigs. There's the purple one. Then there's one that would make Rainbow Brite proud. And more recently, she popped on some long locks of silver tinsels (with matching pasties!). "I love the wigs. Everyone loves wearing wigs," Cyrus told me while promoting her new Viva Glam campaign for Mac Cosmetics' Mac AIDS Fund. "It's so easy. If I could get away with it, with wearing wigs everyday, which I guess I could, but my wigs are a little less professional." It got us wondering, does she ever slip on one of her ol' signature Hannah Montana wigs? "I didn't get to keep one, can you believe that?!" Cyrus said. "They're...

The final guild/industry group to declare nominees did so this afternoon as the Motion Picture Sound Editors (Mpse) spoke up with a roll call of players for the 62nd Golden Reel Awards. On the film side of things, "Birdman" and "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" had the best showing with three nominations each. I've been wondering if the latter could slide into Oscar play this year, but it's hard to gauge here, as "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" had a nice Mpse showing, too. In the effects/foley category, "Fury" is featured as well, also a strong possibility to pop up. All other expected players ("American Sniper," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Unbroken," etc.) are featured. We'll see how the sound branch shakes it all out tomorrow but I'm a little more confused by where they'll end up going than usual, I must say. Check out...

Hollywood’s sound pros nominated Birdman and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes for three awards apiece as the Motion Picture Sound Editors unveiled nods for its 62nd Mpse Golden Reel Awards, honoring the best feature film, television, animation and computer entertainment work of the year.

This year’s nominations reflect that change, spanning an amazing diversity of mediums and genres, all executed at the highest level of creativity. We are truly inspired and impressed by the work of our colleagues.”

It is a cruelty that Halloween is both in the late fall and a mostly outdoor nighttime celebration, because when you were a kid your mom probably made you wear a jacket over your superhypercool Rainbow Brite and/or Karate Kid costume even though the bright glow of candy kept you warm. Now you’re an adult and you don’t have to listen to anybody, but your tolerance for cold is markedly reduced. Cruel. Luckily for all the cold-intolerant/supremely lazy among us, someone invented the costume hoodie, and now all you have to do is throw one on to be both costumed and seasonally appropriately attired. We’ve collected a few of our favorites, so you can order one just in time for Halloween, or just in time to wear in your regular, day to day life. We don’t judge.

After almost a 20 year hiatus, Rainbow Brite is back for a new generation to enjoy with a brand-new show. Starring Emily Osment as the titular character and 80s legend Molly Ringwald and the villainous Dark Princess, the show has has gotten a complete facelift. Which includes a new animation style and way more child-friendly snark. So of course, the Internet is outraged. Outraged. Which hey, that's kind of the Internet's whole bag. But come on guys. I was obsessed with Rainbow Brite! I dressed like her, I put the star stickers on my face (and furniture), I bought all the Color Kids, I damn near threw a tantrum when they discontinued her cereal. However, like a lot of childhood memories, Rainbow Brite is coated in a thick protective sheet of rose-colored glasses. Peeling off that buffer reveals a terrible secret. The original show was awful. Just awful. Created by Hallmark...

Web series creators have recently focused their attention and efforts on younger viewers with reboots of classic children’s television shows. Now, two streaming video-on-demand websites, Netflix and Feeln, are continuing that trend with their versions of Care Bears and Rainbow Brite. For starters, Netflix is taking the popular 80’s brand Care Bears, originally developed as cartoons for American Greetings cards, and turning it into a series called Care Bears and Cousins. The ever-popular streaming site is already working on a remake of PBS’s 1990s series The Magic School Bus. It’s only fitting Netflix try its hand at the Care Bear franchise that has already seen one successful iteration by Discovery’s The Hub Network. Get your side ponytails ready, children of the '80s, 'cause it's about to get really nostalgic in here. "Rainbow Brite" is getting a 21st century reboot with a new online cartoon that will debut November 6 on Feeln.com.
This trailer gives us a peek at what Rainbow Brite, her horse Starlite, and her pal Brian will look and sound like... which is kind of weird. Change is good, but do we really need Rainbow Brite to sound like a Valley Girl? Is Starlite really a "verbose stallion"? Why is there a weird techno soundtrack that sounds like a rave for tweens? Emily Osment ("Hannah Montana," "Family Guy") will be the voice of Ms. Rainbow Brite, with Molly Ringwald as Brite's enemy, The Dark Princess.
We're skeptical, to say the least. Do you agree with io9 that this trailer is a mess? Or will you be logging on to Feeln.

The classic 1980s cartoon Rainbow Bright is going to make a comeback. There are no details on the project or what the animation style will look like. All we have is an Instagram photo of the script from actress Emily Osment who will be providing the voice of the colorful hero. It came along with the following caption:
"First day on the job! Very stoked to be back doing some animation this summer. See you soon! Love, Emily aka Rainbow Brite."
I remember Rainbow Bright being extremely popular, to this day there are still cosplayers out there that dress up as the character. I'll admit, I watched Rainbow Bright, but that's only because I had a friend who was a girl when I was kid that I used to play with, and when I was at her house she got to watch the cartoons she wanted to watch, and one of those was Rainbow Bright.

When the Lone Ranger saves Silver's life from a savage buffalo, Silver gives up living in the wild, wild west to instead carry the masked former Texas Ranger as his loyal equestrian companion.

We were saddened by the news that Gandalf's faithful grey horse Shadowfax - real name Blanco - had died after suffering from an illness last week.
So we thought we'd take the opportunity to stop mourning and instead celebrate Shadowfax and ten other great fictional horses on TV and the silver screen below:

Often I have found myself telling my students, co-workers, interns, and assorted horror movie fans that before diving head first into any media that has been described as “depraved” or “disturbing,” it is important to remember one thing: once you watch something, you can never un-watch it. It will stick with you forever like an unpleasant break-up or a bad tattoo. I give this warning with Mermaid in a Manhole. Sure, the abhorrent and stomach-churning description I give here may make it sound tantalizing to some; the fact that it's considered controversial and often labeled as one of the most “extreme” films ever made may rev up that same inner feeling that makes you read banned books, or listen to the music that your parents told you not to. But just remember before you sit down with a bowl of popcorn to view Mermaid in a Manhole: the stuff you...

Even after 38 and a half seasons, SNL still has the capacity to surprise. Yesterday, I assumed that 2014′s first episode would make some noise about new featured player Sasheer Zamata; given the show’s unusually public search for black female talent, fanfare or at least a formal introduction seemed likely.
But in the end, SNL decided to go a more matter-of-fact route: Zamata wasn’t set apart from the rest of the cast. Instead, she was simply and easily integrated into the show, appearing in no fewer than five sketches throughout the episode. And though Sasheer certainly got more screen...

In Chucky’s storied 25 year history, Andy Barclay has typically been the target. Then the focused shifted to Katherine Heigl, and last but not least, Jennifer Tilly. We all know how those stories ended though, and in Curse Of Chucky, Don Mancini has decided to introduce not only one strong female character, but two, in Fiona Dourif’s wheelchair bound Nica, and her pushy sister Barb (Danielle Bisutti). While I won’t expose their respective fates, let’s just say these two give Chucky a run for his money, one a little more so than the other.
While the two lovely ladies were promoting their latest Chucky sequel in New York City, I had the pleasure of exclusively interviewing them. I apologize for not having video capabilities, as the two spent oh so much time in makeup getting ready, but trust me when I say these two scream queens have...

Things were certainly on a high in Detroit for Daniel Bryan at Night of Champions. The bearded wonder captured his second WWE championship with no real interference from the corporate regime. However, how long would that high last as they rolled into Cleveland and Monday Night Raw? Unfortunately, we didn’t have to wait long to find out.
The show opens with the new WWE champion Daniel Bryan coming out and celebrating with the crowd. Bryan says thank you to all his supporters and leads them in a yes chant before the COO makes his way to the ring.
Triple H says that he would love to come down and say you proved him wrong. However, there was a dispute with the count of referee Scott Armstrong. He brings the referee to the ring to get to the bottom of the situation. Hunter asks Armstrong if he gave a fast...

Joel Madden's never been one to shy away from aggressive or edgy looks, but the former Good Charlotte frontman is really kicking things up a notch with his hairstyles as a coach on "The Voice Australia." Sporting a wide variety of crazy colors and patterns, he seems to have embraced his hair as the perfect medium for self-expression.
Controversy hit the star last week after a small amount of marijuana was found in his Sydney hotel room and police were called, which led to speculation that Madden would be dropped from the show. The incident escalated when he moved out of the hotel and his colleague on the show, Seal, took to Twitter to defend him with a 20-minute-long rant about the Australian media and police. Madden and Seal have since apologized for the weed and the tirade, respectively, and Madden remains on the show.

Yo Joe! Fans of "G.I. Joe" are eagerly awaiting the release of this weekend's "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" which looks be a more faithful adaptation than the previous film installment, and relishes in the infinite ninja battles that have been entertaining audiences through decades of toys, comics, and cartoons. If you need more proof that "Retaliation" gets it right, look to the actors involved; casting larger-than-life action heroes like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Bruce Willis reminds us of those Saturday morning adventures where the Joes recruited Sgt. Slaughter and William "The Refrigerator" Perry (and even came close to nabbing Rocky too!) It's a shame that the Joes didn't team-up with even more icons of the '80s... until now. Moviefone has teamed up with our favorite artist Dennis Culver to imagine an all-star roster of the '80s biggest figures -- from the Goonies to "Rebel Yell" rockers, with a...

Perhaps in an effort to get Kim Kardashian to talk about something other than Kanye West, the British magazine Tatler asked the reality star some pretty random questions.
We already know nearly everything about Kim Kardashian, thanks to her multiple reality series, domination of social media and embodiment of the concept of Tmi. But in case you were wondering, if the 31-year-old was on death row, her choice of last meal would likely put her in a sugar coma before they could give her the lethal injection.
"Cheese pizza, Oreo cookie ice-cream and maybe a vanilla cup cake," Kardashian told Tatler of her final food choices.
Kim's apparent sweet tooth might be one of the reasons she's currently on a mission to lose weight. The reality TV queen recently tweeted that she had lost six pounds using the brand of diet pills she hawks.
Other random facts learned about Kardashian:...

Christina Aguilera's song "Your Body" is (very unsubtly) about sex. The video for "Your Body" is — as best we can tell — about having sex, then killing the Adam Levine look-alike (your new music video everyman) in question with a variety of supplies from the local art store. Or maybe Christina Aguilera only likes guys who actually bleed blue paint? There could be a secret Smurf sex ritual going down in that bathroom stall? Someone on Oranum could probably explain this, but Vulture staff are not allowed to consult psychics during business hours. (We save that stuff for the retreats.) Anyway, here is four minutes of Christina Aguilera looking like an X-rated Rainbow Brite; enjoy.

Trying to keep up with Lady Gaga's hair is like attempting to keep track of when her Bff Lindsay Lohan has a court appearance. We've seen her with blond, orange, gray, lemon sorbet, pink taffeta, Rainbow Brite, cotton candy swirl and My Little Pony hair. Nothing shocks us anymore. Except, of course, when the Mother Monster does something so outlandish, so unprecedented, that we have to stop mid-Botox injection and squint at our screens to gape in horror at the color blinking back at us. Her natural color, brown. Or, as Gaga likes to call it, Louis Vuitton Brown. "Definitely feeling less blond lately and little more progressive brunette," she Tweeted. "I am Louis Vuitton Brown....

Wrapping up our American International Toy Fair coverage (a.k.a. Mike Ryan's Nerdfest Happy Fun Time), we spent some time with your brand new Flint and Lady Jaye from "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," D.J. Cotrona and Adrianne Palicki. I'll say this from talking to Cotrona and Palicki (and earlier with Jon Chu and The Rock): if these guys aren't true G.I. Joe fans, boy, Paramount has done an incredible job prepping them for these interviews. (Which I suppose is possible.) As always, I will warn you, this discussion gets quite nerdy as Palicki reveals her love for Jem and the Holograms and Cotrona reveals his love for ... Rainbow Brite? Wow, look at that. You guys are holding your action figures. Cotrona: Amazing, right? Flint is from Wichita and Lady Laye is from Martha's Vinyard -- it's the classic red state, blue state romance. Cotrona: Yes! In real life it's kind of flipped.

From colorful and quirky, the collection was exactly what we would expect from the outrageous designer -- and considering Katy Perry is a major fan, we think she'll love the latest looks that came down the Fall 2012 runway! Jeremy Scott is known for his outlandish, eccentric looks infused with tons of color and bold graphics, and his Fall 2012 collection definitely stayed consistent with his aesthetic. From a 'Rainbow Brite' striped sequin gown to multi-colored dresses, disco pants and a rainbow-fur, I definitely think it's only a matter of time before Katy Perry shows off some of the show-stopping looks on stage -- but it was his nod to the '90s that really had me excited! From unicorns that look like they came straight off a Lisa Frank trapper keeper to the 'You've Got Mail' intro before the show, it reminded me of the days of bright folders,...

Happy birthday, Nicki Minaj! The "Super Bass" rapper marked her 28th this morning with a simple message on Twitter: "No wishes. Just thanks. Gratitude. To God be the glory," she wrote. She also got a little love from pal, Britney Spears, which has to be a great way to start the morning. And while we don't know how Nicki plans to celebrate the rest of the day, we're sure the diva is gonna do it up in her signature outrageous style. This babe's never met a wig or a Rainbow Brite color she didn't love! So in honor of this artist's B-day, take a look back at all of Minaj's jaw-dropping red carpet moments in our Fashion Spotlight: Nicki Minaj gallery!

If it's been too long since you heard "Whip My Hair" while out at a party, get ready for your new Willow Smith obsession.
The 11-year-old multi-talented daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith debuted her video for "Fireball" on Bet's "106 & Park" today, and if you were hoping for neon clothes and high-energy dancing, you will not be disappointed.
Willow (as she is now known, no "Smith" necessary) gets her song-and-dance on with Nicki Minaj (who is dressed kinda like a furry Rainbow Brite) in the new clip. Now that the video's officially out, how long until the Internet remixes it a gazillion different ways?
We can't wait. Check out the clip below.

In the wake of PBS’ announcement of a Mr. Rogers next-generation spinoff featuring a descendant of Daniel Tiger, I set out to recall exactly who Daniel Tiger was by watching a few clips of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood on YouTube. (Because that’s what the internet, and my work days, are for.) The show was not much like I remembered — the rhythm, dialogue, and messages seemed absolutely foreign to me. Do you ever go back and watch a children’s show after 20-25 years and it’s just completely different? And you think, wow, maybe I should be learning anew from this kiddie crap every day?...

Little boys from the ’80s tend to cite Princess Leia and her gold bikini as the first time their prepubescent minds took notice of a girl, but if we’re being completely, embarrassingly honest — painfully so — we’ve got to admit that Smurfette captured our eyes too.
Now wait a second, no one’s saying a generation of little straight boys had the hots for Smurfette (and she has nothing on the Freudian psycho-sexuality of Leia chained to Jabba the Hutt’s slab), but come on — how could a boy Not notice her? She was the only girl out of 100 little blue dudes,...
