In Defense of Love.. and This Movie Too !
elshikh427 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
It's fun, despite how my importunate brain tells me it's not!

It's all about difficult love story, and how the young spoiled brat became that strong fighter who could win his love, and defend it successfully, thanks to the Indian militaristic academy (the patriotic tone is so high in here).

On the top of the fun's reasons is (Amitabh Bachchan)'s role. After years and years of watching him as the ever angry young man, who's searching for his lost: brother, sister, mother, father (or sometimes all of them together!), now the man has had it, like us to tell you the truth, and after few years of retirement, he produced a movie in which he became an older angry man who acts as the severe mentor not as the noisy rebel, which was catchy to watch.

I loved the wonderful son & father relationship between the kid and his mentor, the dreamy ending, (Bachchan) as a charismatic middle-aged major, and wounded father who lost a son and wants to raise another yet by cruelty, (Nafisa Ali) who played his affectionate wife, the marvelous cinematography, the fervent as well as poetic editing, and that smart directing which enjoyed us all the way, with expressive shots and charming vitality.

It has some magical moments: The first emergence of (Bachchan) as a steely officer, the beaten kid struggles to crawl to the academy's door by the encouragement of his major, the musical meeting of the lovers at the mountain; which I thought for seconds that it would be another romantic Indian song, but it turned out to be a delicate scene just about the charm of love in the air.

Speaking about songs, this commercial movie has few ones which are rarely essential to the story. Just remember "Deewana Ban" as a song and montage about the kid's training to cure himself from his injuries, and build his will; where there was a unique harmony between image and sound. "Pyaar Tumse Karna Hai" which the lead and his girl sang to her family, as a clear statement about their love, instead of a dialogue scene. And in "Sona Sona" the delight was well-made sonically and visually.

But on the other hand (Ahh, my brain is her to revenge, runaway all the lovers of the movie!), there were problems. Their biggest is that climactic sequence with its unbelievable events, where (Bachchan) burst into the girl's wedding with his armed ground forces, attacking her family by cannons, plus the end's weirdest board ever, about the execution of the major and his cadet, because what they have done (read by Bachchan himself!); which maybe was an action forced by the censorship to warn anyone who may try to defend his love by guns, or to make sure that the high commanders, like (Bachchan) in the movie, can't get away with it. But, obviously, that ruined the happy ending, if not the whole thing. Add to that how bad the wig of (Bachchan) was, how dull the action scene at the cave seemed, and how frigid (Ajay Devgan) was!

So, it has little weakness, with shocking if not laughable ending. But if you forget about that, then you'll have a real good time with it, as a nice well-meaning dream. Cinema includes that kind of dreams, and this is part of its beauty.

Major Saab - The match maker saab
jaysshukla23 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, so we see cadets and a major here in the military uniform but no this time they are not getting trained or prepared to fight for the country, instead we see them trying to reunite lovers.

I wouldn't have seen much problem with the above theme but the establishment of it itself is disturbing. Ajay Devgan's character is interested in inheriting his father's property and thus decides to join NDA, in a hope that he would get to run away soon. Soon after the plot progresses, Ajay Devgan's father's will was neither mentioned nor does Ajay's motives matter anymore.

Guess what, we never get to see Ajay Devgan contemplating on his father's main reasoning for him wanting to join army or straightening him, rather what made him stay in the NDA is 'his love for the heroine Sonali Bendre'. No matter, how typical 90s does it look like, how it can ever convince the serious viewers but this so called love (where Ajay even tries to forcefully kiss and molest Sonali) had enough intensity that he wants to do well by being in the army only. For his love, sure he could've easily end up staying in the city, but how can one develop interest in something, which requires extreme struggle, rather than simply inheriting the father's property and get settled in the same city as Sonali. Not that one could still hope to win over the girl's heart. In short, a stupid character development.

Now imagine your boss sticking a photo of your wife on your desk. Here, the major sticks his cadet's girlfriend's photo on the tree just to inspire him to train harder whilst also telling him now this is your destiny. This is one of the most unintentional funny scenes I have ever come across. That was really good for the guilty pleasure.

So much of action in the movie and we only see the army fighting the civilians and not the enemy soldiers. Will this movie ever convince you that if you are in an army, all of your colleagues and bosses would help you in fighting the baddies and to win over a girl? That too when simultaneously taking the oath to fight for a nation. Who has got this much of time in the military. Who would interfere in someone's personal life like this. Remove the army angle from this movie and it easily becomes lot better. If willing to show the army works, why not show us what they exactly do?

Despite all this, Amitabh's dialogue delivery was nothing short of outstanding. Few quotes were also well-written. It almost made me forget how horrible this movie is. However, the actress who played his wife was at times annoying.

Last but not the least, the lyrics Kehta hai pal pal tumse hoke dil yeh deewana, ek pal bhi Jane jana mujhse dur nahi jana, calms me greatly! Very melodious song.

Bollywood masala with a NDA backdrop (eye roll)
chellaton-0503625 October 2023
I know this is a rather old movie. From Bollywood I don't expect a lot. Mindless masala. Where I do expect quality is the NDA. I don't understand how the Indian Army or the NDA could let itself be associated and exploited with such drivel.

If there is a redeeming point to this movie - it is that Devgn got himself a haircut that looks like it belongs there. I didn't think that someone could just get up, dust his butt, and walk into NDA.

Some attention to technical details would have helped. But Bollywood doesn't believe in that. Misogyny, over the top dialogs and generally free of reason. It would have been better to send the dude to a policy academy. The level of dignity and respectability of police force in India wasn't as high as it might be today.

Looking forward to seeing Sam Bahadur and Tejas.

To top things of the major's uniform that Bachchan wears is more in line with a "major" of a local band.

Tejas dialogs promise to be quite uninspired.
