The premise behind this is actually interesting -- a woman has the delusion that she has a child - which doesn't exist. But the actual carrying out of this idea, in the film, is terrible. A nanny is hired by a family, and is told right off the bat by the husband, that they have two children, plus a middle child that doesn't exist, named Maggie. This child is the wife/mother's delusion, and the family just goes along with it. The oldest daughter, age 10, has learned how to think fast on her feet, and can lie with the best of them to cover this up. The young son, Sam, age 4, thinks Maggie exists. As if this isn't astounding enough, the young English Nanny, also goes along with this "idea."Eventually a half-baked, vague reason is given for why the wife/mother has done this, and why the husband/father is going along with it.The viewer is left to reel in astonishment as this delusion continues, not only in the home but in public as well.If the mother had had no children, or a child had died, this "might" have worked, but since she has two children, there never seems a really good reason for her to be inventing this middle child.Typical of Hollywood, the serious mental illness of being "delusional" is regarded as a wonderful thing for the whole family!
