Warner Bros.’ DC blockbuster Wonder Woman has reached another milestone at the box office this weekend, with the film taking its global haul to a whopping $800 million.

The Patty Jenkins-directed superhero movie has grossed $404 million domestically, making it the highest-grossing Dceu release in the U.S., and Warner Bros.’ third biggest film ever behind The Dark Knight ($533.3 million) and The Dark Knight Rises ($448.1 million).

Worldwide, Wonder Woman trails the box office total of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($873.3 million), and is the fifth highest grossing movie of the year so far after Beauty and the Beast ($1.263 billion), The Fate of the Furious ($1.239 billion), Despicable Me 3 ($948.4 million) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($862.3 million).

Gal Gadot will be reprising the role of the Amazon Princess this November for Justice League, while Wonder Woman 2 is set to hit cinemas in 2019.

Patty Jenkins set for bumper payday on Wonder Woman 2

18 August 2017 5:15 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

During the San Diego Comic-Con, it was officially announced that Gal Gadot will be reprising the role of the Amazon Princess in Wonder Woman 2, set for release on December 13th 2019.

Absent from the original announcement was news of Patty Jenkins’ return as director, and according to Deadline, that is because the filmmaker was yet to close her deal, but is now putting pen to paper on a contract that will see her become the highest-paid female director in Hollywood.

The site reports that Jenkins’ deal “is in line with any other [male] director who has performed at this level”, referring to the near-$800 million box office gross of this year’s DC superhero blockbuster. Although no specific figures are mentioned, the article goes on to report that Zack Snyder was paid around $10 million for Man of Steel, whereas a fresh director working on a comic book movie will usually receive between $1.5 million and $3 million. »

Kate Beckinsale on turning down the role of Wonder Woman

11 August 2017 8:59 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Long before Gal Gadot donned the tiara and bracelets for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and her subsequent solo movie, Warner Bros. spent many a year looking to getting a Wonder Woman movie off the ground, with Joss Whedon boarding the project for a couple of years in the mid-2000s in what proved to be a failed attempt to bring the Amazon Princess to the big screen.

One actress high on Warner Bros.’ shortlist for the role of Diana Prince at that time was Kate Beckinsale, and speaking to Yahoo Movies, the Underworld star has (rather diplomatically) explained why she passed on the opportunity:

“The incarnations that I was seeing were… They weren’t this one [the 2017 film],” said Beckinsale. “Also, I don’t know if I was desperate to be in a leotard. I’d already done the rubber trousers. You have to take in that you have a »

Alien: Covenant Honest Trailer Goes Savage on Ridley Scott Bomb

9 August 2017 10:27 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Several of this summer's major releases managed to disappoint. Some at the box office and some in terms of expectations. In some cases, it was a bit of both. Such is the case with Alien: Covenant, which was poised to be the Alien movie we've all been waiting thirty years for. Instead, we wound up with another divisive movie that massively underperformed at the box office. Now, the Honest Trailer gang has decided to give us their take on Alien: Covenant as it heads to Blu-ray and DVD, and it is pretty brutal, but definitely hilarious.

The folks over at Screen Junkies decided to make Alien: Covenant the subject of this week's honest trailer, in honor of the movie making its way to home video. This is an honest trailer in the truest sense in that, even those who loved this movie can easily see what is being poked fun »

The Top 12 Composers of the 21st Century, From Hans Zimmer to Nick Cave

7 August 2017 9:00 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

In an age where special effects reign supreme, there’s one aspect of the filmmaking process that hasn’t gone through a radical transformation — music. Some of the best movies in any given year would be sorely lacking without their memorable scores, and this has remained true well into the first two decades of the 21st century.

Film composers play an integral part in the filmmaking process, and there are a handful whose bodies of work stand out in recent years. Of course, this list of 12 major composers only begins to scratch the surface of the talent out there. There are plenty of other worthy contributors to the medium who didn’t make the cut — Danny Elfman and John Williams, we’re looking at you — but rest assured that this top dozen represent the cream of the crop.

Wonder Woman’s Blu-ray release date may have been revealed

3 August 2017 12:02 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

The release date for the Wonder Woman Blu-ray may have been revealed by Amazon.

While the DC superhero film is still bringing in money at cinemas, many are already anticipating being able to own the Gal Gadot led movie at home.

Well, if an Amazon posting is to be believed, fans won’t have to wait too much longer as the posting states the release date is September 19.

The report comes via Batman News who are saying that Wonder Woman will find itself available on iTunes digital HD on Tuesday, August 29. They are also reporting the Blu-ray September, 19 release date.

Amazon has since removed the listing in question, but as it is normal procedure to have films drop on digital services slightly before coming to discs, one can assume that the Blu-ray will probably release somewhere around this date.

Wonder Woman has beaten Deadpool’s global box office takings

2 August 2017 1:01 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Wonder Woman has now surpassed Deadpool at the global box office.

The DC superhero movie has managed to add another scalp to its name, with its impressive international receipts meaning that is has now surpassed the tremendous effort of Deadpool.

Deadpool managed to bring in a very impressive $783.1 million back in 2016 but it will have to settle for second best in this contest as Wonder Woman has collected $786 million and counting.

Both films were surprise hits in their own way, with Deadpool being rated-r and starring a somewhat obscure and cult hero, and Wonder Woman coming off the back of a tough time for DC in terms of critical acclaim.

But Wonder Woman managed to win over fans and a good number of critics, helping to set things for DC back on track. At least until Justice League arrives.

Warner Bros. planning “formidable” Oscar campaign for Wonder Woman

30 July 2017 9:38 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Having scored a critical and commercial hit with Wonder Woman, Variety is reporting that Warner Bros. is hoping the DC blockbuster can make a big splash this coming awards season.

According to the site, studio executives have been plotting a “formidable” awards season campaign for the Amazon Princess’ solo debut, and are looking to make it the first ever superhero movie nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, as well as securing a Best Director nomination for Patty Jenkins.

Warner Bros. is said to be hoping that the positive reception to the Academy screening of the film – and the expanded membership of the voting body – will help to boost the film’s Oscar chances.

The DC Extended Universe has enjoyed some Oscar success already, with Suicide Squad winning the Academy Award for Best Makeup earlier this year.

What do you make of Wonder Woman’s Best Picture chances? Is it worthy of a nomination? »

The directors who can take cinema forward over the next decade

30 July 2017 5:00 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Tom Jolliffe on the directors who can take cinema forward over the next decade…

There’s a cinematic crossroads on the horizon. As the market gets swallowed up by a core consumer taste leaning toward spandex and radioactive arachnid bites, there’s a need for modern thinking, engaging directors to offer something different. After all, there’s only so long the Marvel cow can be milked. It will dry out. It’s the way of things. Studios now bank on billion dollar returns. These seem safe bets now, but for how long? Ultimately it will become a huge gamble.

We’re still seeing interesting film-makers doing their best to re-invigorate or subvert genres. Edgar Wright just smashed it out of the park with Baby Driver. There was a degree of hyperbole about marking him as a cinematic master (until he improves his depiction of women in films, that may allude »

I thought it was a triumph,” said Atwell. “I came out of that walking on air, and I think what’s brilliant about it is, it’s a genre piece, it’s a superhero movie, it’s pitch-perfect from Gal’s performance to the script to the music, it has just the right amount of tongue-in-cheek humor, it’s engaging, and I was so so surprised by the end of it.
