Storyline

Lillian is a 21-year-old drifter engaged to a philandering loser and locked in her room with a strange man. She lives next to a failed violinist who won't stop playing his instrument. He lives next to a New Age fanatic who's into colonic treatments; she lives next to two drug addicts who mess with the wrong prostitutes and end up answering to a pimp named Mr. Tangerine. In a barrage of head-spinning vignettes, we are sucked into a surreal motel fantasy-land where society's riffraff dwell in that awkward place between freedom and desperation. Written by Anonymous

Outstanding first film.
19 April 1999 | by (Los Angeles) – See all my reviews

Tarantino better be looking over his shoulder, because there's a new sheriff in town. Rarely, almost never, actually, does a writer/director this young turn out something this polished. This movie is funny from start to finish, really, really funny. Many moments of inspired brilliance. Delicious dialog. Beautifully restrained camera work that still delivers a distinctive style and punch, unlike the whiplash frenzy most of his peers believe to be directing. And the jokes keep coming back, time and time again, until the audience was roaring with laughter after just a few frames of film when a particularly good one came back around. An excellent cast with many recognizable names and faces, many in very small but outstanding roles, and some newcomers who can soon quit their waiter jobs. And then, of course, there's the music. One of Tarantino's secret weapons is his strange but brilliant taste in oddball music. Marius Balchunas has the same gift, in spades. The eclectic music from this film will make an excellent soundtrack album, but is better heard in conjunction with the incredible images on-screen.
