A mailman learns that he is the local nobleman's natural son.But his late father was under an adventuress/painter's charm and the lady is not prepared to give up the nest egg.Helped by a so-called astrologer (who is also her lover),she tries to fool the naive heir-at-law in order to latch on to his desirable property. This plot is silly but the three leads (Fernandel,Jules Berry and Elvire Popesco) make up for it with gusto. There are fine lines along the way:
-A cocktail,it's anything mixed with anything!
-Just like a marriage!
The ending even verges on fantastic as Fernandel nearly gets drowned and takes a walk on the sweet side of Paradise where he meets his ancestors and where he eats the fruit of truth(the apple!!!)And even in this very light plot ,there's ambiguity: dream or "reality" ?There are also snatches of musicals as a couple of songs are included.Fernandel was also a singer, and in many of his movies,he used to pull a little tune.
