A decent epilogue to the series
WeAreLive10 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I am just going to keep this review short and just while I'll admit even for me the series ended perfectly with the ending Miaka and Yui graduating from middle school and living life happy. However, I personally OVA's weather if you consider them canon or not was just a decent epilogue to the series and probably should have just ended.

Better, but still not Fushigi Yuugi worthy
Nallohki22 May 1999
The second OAV series was a definite improvement over the first, but there were still several problems associated with it.

1) Probably the most prominent reason for this OAV series not living up to the original was, again, LENGTH OF SHOW. The amount of material gone over in these 6 30-minute episodes needed another TV series at least. Apparently they thought that they could cover the second half of the manga in a space less than a 1/5th of the space (First + Second OAV series). Sorry, it didn't work.

2) Because of the speed, the story told the emotional parts with much detail, but with the action between the scenes reduced to such a degree, the scenes were meaningless.

3) The music was just not as fitting. While there was a few of the original TV tunes mixed here and there, and the new music was not at all BAD, it simply did not fit the series correctly, and did not compliment the actions or emotions of the characters (I greatly missed the TV ending theme).

There was one very good thing that the 2nd OAV series took from the first was what was called 'Bad Play' (A takeoff of 'Fushigi Yuugi', which means 'Mysterious Play'). After each episode, they would have a small section with scenes of the show redone in various funny ways. I laughed very hard at a few of these.

All in all, the bad outweighs the good, and the show is nowhere near what it could have been. Alas, the end of Fushigi Yuugi.

A fitting end to FY
blackhawk.sc14 January 2001
The second OVA series is divided into 6 parts, each seemingly has its own story separate from the previous episode. Fans of the characters Nuriko, Chichiri, Tasuki, and Hotohori will be glad that parts of this second OVA will be dedicated to them. Chiriko definately gets a bigger role and Mitsukake is still his old boring self...

Interaction and movement between the book world and the real world keep these episodes interesting (nothing amazing such as some of the episodes in the actual series) but the predominant theme has and always will be that the strongest love overcomes all obstacles. After watching the series one should know that by now.

Expect a general continuation of the Fushigi Yuugi epic. Don't expect major surprises. This OVA2 gets a 9 out of 10 from me, just cause I'd give the series itself a 10 out of 10 if TV series could be voted on.

Much better than the First OAV series; reminiscent of the TV series but with better animation
Mel-5629 October 1998
This second OAV series starts off with a re-cap of the end of the first OAV series, but is superior both in story and art to the first series. The humor from the TV series is back and the animation is first-rate. This 6-part series is based primarily on the manga, volumes 14-18, with some exclusions and minor changes. Miaka and Yui are now in high school and somehow Tamahome has been reincarnated in Miaka's world as a human boy named Taka Sukunami. He attends the same college as Miaka's older brother Keisuke and his best friend, Tetsuya. Taka is Miaka's boyfriend, but he has no memories of his previous life as the Suzaku seishi Tamahome. In fact, his memories have been stored away in memory globes, with each of his fellow Suzaku seishi possessing one of them. Miaka and Taka journey back to the Universe of the Four Gods to retrieve the globes and restore his memory, but there is a great evil trying to block their way. The Majin, Tenkou, rears his ugly head again - this time assisted by new villains, including a brother-and-sister duo who became demons because of their incest, a water demon who was once Chichiri's best friend, and a demon who takes on the appearance of Tamahome! By the end of Episode 1, Tenkou has destroyed Mt. Taikyoku and Taiitsu-kun has disappeared. Can Miaka and her loyal seishi stop Tenkou's destruction? Will Taka ever regain his memories as Tamahome? Is Taiitsu-kun gone forever? The end of this OAV series may finally provide closure to the Fushigi Yuugi saga.

Overused
OginoChihiro2 October 2003
Warning: Spoilers
Once again, the plot is overused and unoriginal. *spoiler warning* Practically EVERY character reappears! Half of them have no influence on the story or plot! *end spoiler* They're Fushigi Play-ing arounds are also pointless and annoying. It seems as though the producers, directors, and writers have no more ideas left that they had to create pointless junk to annoy the viewer! Although the animation has improved, the plot, once again, is too repetitive.
