Industry awaits Tiff deals

6 September 2014 5:34 PM, PDT | ScreenDaily | See recent ScreenDaily news »

Updated: A torpid start to the market coupled with concerns over the desirability of acquisition titles has left buyers looking expectantly towards reportedly a $10m-plus deal for Top Five.

By Sunday evening a growing number of buyers were circling Chris Rock’s adult comedy (pictured), arguably the only potentially commercial available title to earn universal praise.

Also drawing attention were François Girard’s Boychoir, Jalmari Helander’s Big Game, Noah Baumbach’s While We’re Young, Thomas McCarthy’s The Cobbler and Ed Zwick’s Pawn Sacrifice.

Acquisitions teams have also seen Lone Scherfig’s The Riot Club, Paul Bettany’s directorial debut Shelter, Michael Douglas starrer The Reach and Kristen Wiig starrer Welcome To Me. Contrary to reports Sophie BarthesMadame Bovary remains on the table and had not been sold at time of the updated report on Sunday afternoon.

Sunday’s offerings include Oren Moverman’s Time Out Of Mind, Bill Pohlad’s Love »

Four days after a 6.0 earthquake hit the region, the 4th annual Napa Valley Film Festival has declared it will go ahead with the event and set its narrative and documentary competition lineups for Nov. 12-16.

“Our thoughts are with everyone in the Napa Valley who have suffered losses from the recent earthquake,” said Co-Founder/Artistic Director Marc Lhormer. “We are proud to be part of a community that rallies in support of each other in such a generous and big hearted way. As they say in the business, the show must go on.”

Saturday’s quake was the largest in the San Francisco Bay Area since the 6.9 Loma Prieta shaker in 1989 and caused up to $1 billion in damage, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

“This is an exceptionally strong year for both the Narrative and Documentary competition programs,” said Program Director Herb Stratford. “These filmmakers have created new works that provoke, »

ABC Reveals Fall Schedule

15 July 2014 10:45 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Four days ago, we brought you news of Fox’s 2014-15 fall television line-up, which included such highly-anticipated shows as Gotham and Gracepoint, and now ABC has thrown its hat into the ring by releasing its own fall schedule. Though I don’t think any of us would argue that ABC has a single show with as much advance buzz as Gotham, there are still some promising programs in the mix this year, despite the network’s overabundance of half-hour comedies.

Personally, I’m most interested to see How to Get Away with Murder, which will bring two-time Oscar nominee Viola Davis to the small screen under the watch of Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes. The plot, about a legal professor in Philadelphia who becomes wrapped up along with her students in a murder plot, sounds more serialized than most, and Davis is a tremendously talented actress, so unless How to »

Channel 5 has now unveiled a teaser trailer for Big Brother: Armageddon - but has cruelly refused to provide any details about what's coming up.

The ten-second trailer, voiced by Marcus Bentley, simply tells viewers: "Four days that will change the house forever - Big Brother Armageddon Week, all next week on Channel 5."

Fans have suggested that the week could involve Helen Wood losing her pass to the final, new housemates coming in or electricity being removed from the house.

Listen To The First Music From The Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes Score

24 June 2014 6:33 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Michael Giacchino is one of the best composers in the modern age of the film business, partially because of his ability to understand the work of his predecessors and adapt them to a new, yet unique context. He's also a success because he's so damned busy, with two films this year and four for next year all containing a musical score penned by him. One of this year's selections is the upcoming blockbuster Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, set for release on July 11th. To the surprise of concert hall audiences in Lucern and London, the composer premiered a suite of themes from the film right before their very eyes. Don't believe us? As you can see above, we have the video to prove it. Four days ago, the following message went out on Mr. Giacchino's official Twitter feed: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes From our »

Aaron Paul On Breaking Bad’s BAFTA TV Win

Breaking Bad‘s win at the BAFTA TV Awards last night was a momentous occasion, if only because it isn’t shown on regular television. The show, that’s found a home on Netflix UK, has a legion of British fans and Aaron Paul, who accepted the award, was on hand to discuss what this win meant to him.

The actor, who played Jesse Pinkman on the show, admitted that he does re-watch old episodes. ‘There’s an episode in season two called Four Days Out,‘ he said. ‘It takes place in the desert, just Bryan [Cranston] and I … trying to figure a way to get the Rv to start up again.’ He went on to explain that the reason that episode is such a favourite of his was because ‘…it felt like a two-man play.‘

Of course, fans of the show will get to return in a manner of speaking, »

On the trail of a con man

Richard John Taylor had no problem attracting investors to his films. After all, he was a senior editor on EastEnders, ran a production company with Louis Theroux and had a lucrative deal with ITV. There was only one problem…

At the end of Tina Renton's book, You Can't Hide, she thanks her friend Richard John Taylor for everything he's done for her. Taylor, a film-maker, had become a saviour of sorts. He had met her through Rape Crisis in August 2011 when she was at her most vulnerable, befriended her, gave her a job as his personal assistant and made her feel worthwhile again.

Renton's story was as inspirational as it was shocking. She had been abused by her stepfather from the age of six. At 14, she told her mother, but her mother said if she went to the police, the family would be left homeless. She threw her partner out of the house, »

ABC Family Pilot ‘Alice In Arabia’ Not Going Forward After Pressure From Muslim Advocacy Group

Four days after giving a pilot greenlight to drama Alice In Arabia, ABC Family is pulling the plug on the project about an American teenage girl kidnapped by her extended royal Saudi Arabian family and forced to live with them. “The current conversation surrounding our pilot was not what we had envisioned and is certainly not conducive to the creative process, so we’ve decided not to move forward with this project,” the network said in a statement. The project was met with disapproval by Muslim advocacy group the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which called on ABC Family to meet with Muslim and Arab-American community leaders so they can voice their concerns about potential stereotyping. “We are concerned that, given media references to the main character ‘surviving life behind the veil,’ the pilot and any resulting series may engage in stereotyping that can lead to things like bullying of Muslim students, »

'Lindsay': What did you think of Lohan's new show?

9 March 2014 8:49 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Just so that we know "Lindsay" (Sundays at 9:00 p.m. on Own) is not a trashy reality show, somber black-and-white text greets us to set the stage. On July 30, 2013, Lindsay Lohan ended her 90-day stint in rehab. Four days later, she began filming this show. About two minutes after that, she started a deeply sublimated quest to make her handlers, sycophants and slave labor intensely crazy by stirring up drama in the most mundane tasks you can imagine. I half expected to see Lindsay arguing with the coin slots at the laundromat, but we can all assume Linsday does not do her own laundry.  At first, though, it's the calm before the storm. Lindsay is looking for an apartment in New York City, so she drives from one location to another while her minions remind her what she's doing and where she is and one suck-up pal tries to »

WGA & AMPTP “Very Close” To New Labor Deal

6 March 2014 2:00 PM, PST | Deadline TV | See recent Deadline TV news »

Exclusive: Four days after returning to the negotiating table, the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and TV Producers are near an agreement on a new three-year contract, I’ve learned. “We’re not there yet and there are still a few more I’s to dot and T’s to cross, but we’re very close,” one insider told me today. With many of the bulky points already coming together in the first two weeks of talks, the two sides spent some of their two-week temporary recess fine-tuning the agreement, sources on both sides say, before sitting down again at AMPTP’s Sherman Oaks HQ. An official announcement could come as early as the beginning of next week. If you take out the downtime, this year’s talks pretty much follow the timeline of the placid 2011 negotiations, which started on March 3 that year and were all done by »

How convenient: Four days before Pharrell is scheduled to perform it at the Oscars, and five days before his album G I R L drops, "Happy" is the No. 1 song on the Billboard "Hot 100." Anyway, congratulations to Pharrell, his schedulers, and his hat. »
