"Batfink" was a truly avant garde cartoon. It introduced an ironic self awareness into animation that was truly ahead of its time. Compare episodes such as this ("Batfink On The Rocks") with other contemporary works (such as Hal Seeger's other cartoons - Milton The Monster, Flukey Luke, Fearless Fly, et al), and you'll see what I mean.
In the UK, after being screened once on TV, these episodes had an extremely limited release in the early 1980s on video, in packs of about 15 episodes. Only 100 shows were ever made, so one assumes that makes about 5 videos: but even the BBFC can't quite straighten out how they were released. It's now almost impossible to track them down, but they are unalloyed joy if you can. The sheer predictability and routine of each episode actually works in their favour; and lines such as "Karate: to the Battleack" or "Your bullets cannot harm me: my wings are like a shield of steel" are immortal!
Now, if release in DVD format were good for one thing, then it's got to be for things like this! Someone track down Mr. Seeger! (And I don't mean Bob...)
