This short documentary was born also after the success of Carlo Levi's novel "Cristo si è fermato a Eboli", trying to show that Southern Italy was also full of desire to evolve and grow up. The documentary is surely interesting as a reportage of the condition of a country in the south of Italy during the '50s (the activity were mainly linked to the sheep-farming and the illiteracy was an enormous problem), but it is also an example of passion and diligence for the improvement of society toward the culture: the main character is in fact a professor that try to teach illiterate people how to make their own sign and to create a cultural centre in a place of desolation. We can see it not in opposition with the novel of Levi, even if that is more pessimist and raw.
