Storyline

An archaeological expedition finds the mummified bodies of Genghis Khan and his army somewhere in Mongolia. Unaware that the location is cursed, the explorers wake up the former ruler of the Mongolian empire. He warns the intruders that a large calamity will befall the world in one thousand days. The only ones who can prevent this from happening are three persons who bear wolf-shaped arrow scars. They must join forces and kill the "three emperors" so that the Khan's soul can once again sleep for a thousand years. Written by AnimeNewsNetwork

Violent anime about the "three former emperors"
17 January 2014 | by (Norway) – See all my reviews

"Crimson Wolf", also called "Hon ran" or "Hong Lang" is an action-packed anime, directed in 1993 by Shôichi Masuo.

Basic plot: Somewhere in Mangolia, a hidden tomb of Genghis Khan is found by an archaeological expedition. As this place is cursed, this former ruler of the Mangolian empire tells the explorers that in one thousand days a great disaster will strike the entire world.

And it is up to three people with the mark of a wolf to stop the "three former rulers" (Genghis Khan, the Qin Emperor and Mao Zedong) from becoming the supreme masters of the world, and their names are: Shin (a martial-arts student in Beijing), Mizuho Washio (Shin's Japanese love interest) and Ryuko (a Chinese tong boss).

This only one hour anime can be a good choice if you like action-packed animations coming from Japan. But please don't let children view this film. Throughout this anime, there are many scenes of violence which often get bloody results (eye-cutting with a razorblade, fingers through jaws etc). And there are a few scenes of nudity and a couple of short sex scenes.

The animation, and the drawings are OK. The soundtrack reminds me about the music you could often hear in any American action/B-movies of the 90s. During the Beijing scenes, how Kei fights a small group of killers reminds me a little bit about how Kenshiro fights some enemies in "Fist of the North Star", however, this scene is not so gory compared to the just mentioned "FOTNS".

As I said earlier, this anime might be a good choice if you like anime filled with lots of action, and some gore as well. For this, my overall rating gets to be: 7/10.
