MTV Movie & TV Awards 2017 Recap: Not Only The Most Progressive Ever, But Also MTV’s Farewell to Millennials

7 May 2017 9:10 PM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

MTV’s annual Movie Awards – now with TV attached – was as irreverent as usual on Sunday night. And yet, with this year’s entry, the tone was noticeably different.

For one thing, as widely noted, the newly rechristened “MTV Movie & TV Awards” included television series for the first time. And this was also perhaps the most woke MTV awards show in recent years, as the network embracing its decision to merge male and female performers into one, singular acting category. Other awards shows have blended male and female performers in the past, but never to the extent that a major kudocast like MTV has done.

And here’s how progressive Sunday night’s winners were: Of the 19 categories, all but two – was won (or shared a win) by a female and/or person of color, or a cast featuring women or people of color.

Time Inc’s Instant Brand Launches A ‘Trl’ Analogue For Musical.ly’s Live.ly

27 April 2017 11:07 AM, PDT | Tubefilter.com | See recent Tubefilter News news »

Since its launch during last year’s VidCon, Time Inc.’s Instant brand has provided a platform through which the major media company can engage with the global community of online video stars in a mobile-friendly way. The latest manner in which Instant is accomplishing that goal is Irl, a new Live.ly series that looks to bring the spirit of MTV’s classic program Total Request Live (Trl) to the world of social video.

Irl is a 45-minute program that will run each Thursday on Instant’s officially Live.ly channel. Live.ly, a mobile streaming platform launched last year, is related to the wildly popular Musical.ly app, which has spawned its own cadre of youthful, charismatic stars. Those creators, as well others who are making hay of Musical.ly and its mobile-live brethren, will be highlighted in Irl episodes, just as Trl highlighted Top 40 tastemakers across more than 2,200 episodes. »

Sure, One Direction are cool and all, but if we’re being honest, we never really got over our childhood dream of seeing The Beets in concert.

What They’re From: Josie and the PussycatsWhy We Wish They Were Real: Because our two favorite things in this world are glitter and girl power, and these three have been serving both in equal measure since 2001. (And also because we’re hoping that DuJour would open up for them on tour, because we still know all the words to “DuJour ‘Round the World.”)

5 April 2017 10:30 PM, PDT | POPSUGAR | See recent BuzzSugar news »

Back in the early 2000s, we found out about the latest music from MTV's Trl, posted whatever song we were listening to on our Aim away message, and would spend hours trying to re-create the latest looks from Britney Spears's or Christina Aguilera's music videos. Of course, no party in those days was complete without someone bringing over a burned CD of pop and hip-hop jams that they may or may not have downloaded via Napster. Just because we're feeling nostalgic for the early days of the 2000s, we've rounded up some of the biggest party songs from 1999 to 2004. Keep scrolling for the full list, and click the videos to listen! Related:100 Essential Songs For Your '90s Dance Party »

This article originally appeared on EW.com.

If you didn’t know any better, someone would have thought it was 1999 all over again in Las Vegas on Wednesday night — and that is no insult. This time, though, there was no Carson Daly and no Trl, but there was a proper boy band on stage. Six months after announcing they were beginning a 26-show residency at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino, the Backstreet Boys took the stage to 4,600 screaming fans. MTV’s Turnaround Plan: More Music, More Live, More Fun

9 February 2017 2:00 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

What does the new regime at Viacom want from its MTV? More live programs, more music themes, a greater emphasis on youth culture and, in general, a whole lot more fun.

MTV is the biggest rehabilitation project for Viacom’s cable group, which has been reconfigured to channel more resources to six “flagship” channels out of the total domestic portfolio of 25 channels.

The process of consolidating and integrating Viacom’s cable assets began in October when VH1 and Logo president Chris McCarthy was handed the reins of MTV. Over the past few months he has assembled a core team of top execs who oversee programming, development and marketing for the three channels.

The team has raced to assemble a new slate of unscripted programming for MTV that will be unveiled starting in the summer. The goal is to seed unscripted tentpole series in an effort to bring some youthful sizzle back to the channel.
