Marguerite and Sophie de la Tour, two women rejected by the society of their time, have taken shelter on the Ile de France (now Mauritius). They both give birth to a child, Sophie to a baby girl she names Virginie and Marguerite to Paul, a baby boy. The two children are brought up together and grow like brother and sister amidst the luscious nature of the island, far from the class prejudices prevailing in France.
