Every car seen in the movie (with the exception of the opening sequence) is either a lime green or black new Volkswagen Beetle. The cars in the opening sequence are all classic VW Beetles.
This marks the final film appearance of actress Glynis Johns.
Actors Will Ferrell, Molly Shannon, and Mark McKinney all appeared together in another film, A Night at the Roxbury (1998). In that movie Ferrell was also Shannon's romantic interest. McKinney also plays a church figure in both films.
This movie is based on an SNL character that Molly Shannon was throughout her time on SNL (Saturday Night Live).
Artie Lange and David Faustino auditioned for the part of Sky Corrigan.

During filming, director Bruce McCulloch asked that Karen Dwyer, who played Summer, remove her belly piercing, as the director believed that Catholic schoolgirls shouldn't be pierced. Ironically, Dwyer did, in fact, attend a Catholic school during her school years.

A green VW Bug can be seen in the background of any outdoor scene, sometime multiples in a single scene, this is a possible reference to Bullitt (1968) during the climatic chase scene a green VW bug is about the only car that can be seen over and over again driving thru the streets.
