Odd but strangely charming, a misfire you forgive.
4 July 1999 | by (Florida) – See all my reviews

"Late Last Night" is a movie that is willing to go up several blind alleys before finding an ultimately sweet tone. From a druggy haze to a full-scale production number that comes out of left field. Emilio Estevez succeeds in making us feel the pain of Dan, a man whose life has stopped cold when his wife leaves him.

Steven Webber is Jeffrey (again!) the old friend who assumes the roles of Jimminy Cricket, Mr. Natural, King Lear's Fool, and father confessor when Dan calls him for help.

The movie's shifting tones are dictated by the protean Jeff's many personae. Webber is skillful and mysteriously sexy as he manages the many faces he presents to Dan.

Unfortunately, this blend of magical realism, gritty nighttime ordeal, and farce never quite jells -- but it has so many nice moments that I forgave it. Especially when Webber and the drugged up denizens of a subterranean rave break into song.
