Fox News Channel’s ‘The O’Reilly Factor’ Surges in Ratings

26 February 2015 3:07 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

“The O’Reilly Factor” has long been the most popular program in cable news, and the controversy surrounding host Bill O’Reilly’s war-reporting experiences has only helped elevate the show’s ratings.

Wednesday night’s “Factor” delivered easily the program’s largest audience of 2015 in the key news demo of adults 25-54 (705,000) — up 24% week-to-week, up 62% year-over-year and more than four times the audience of cable news runner-up “Anderson Cooper” on CNN (162,000).

It also dominated in total viewers, moving back past the 3 million mark (3.084 million) while its MSNBC (907,000) and CNN (535,000) competition drew about half as much combined. MSNBC was above average in total viewers with its exclusive town hall meeting with President Obama, but it wasn’t even close.

O’Reilly didn’t address the Mother Jones story on his Falkland War reporting from 1982 during Wednesday’s show, but it’s likely that he’s getting a bump from the controversy’s aftermath. »

Why Bill O’Reilly Has a Bill O’Reilly Problem

24 February 2015 12:40 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Mother Jones provocatively titled its investigative piece questioning Bill O’Reilly’s account of his war reporting during the Falklands War “Bill O’Reilly Has His Own Brian Williams Problem.” But in its aftermath, what seems far clearer is that Bill O’Reilly has a Bill O’Reilly problem.

The combative Fox News host has been characteristically aggressive in defending his reputation, feeling he has been unfairly maligned. That included a nine-minute segment on his show Monday, after which he said: “I want to stop this now. I hope we can stop it. I really do.”

At this point, however, nobody is doing more to keep the story alive than O’Reilly, as lashing out at former CBS News colleagues has merely invited more of them to dispute his version of events, just as trying to intimidate a New York Times reporter is stoking further coverage and making him look »

It's been more than 20 years since Zoey Tur - then a news chopper pilot known as Bob Tur - famously tracked O.J. Simpson's slow-speed Bronco chase, but the 54-year-old is back in the news after going public with her transition from a man to a woman. "It all started around age 6," Tur tells People. "But I didn't understand it or see anyone that felt the way that I did, so I just buried it." But following a 2003 divorce from wife Marika Gerrard, Tur says the gender dysphoria continued to get worse for years, until she reached a breaking point. »

‘Family Feud’ Continues Ratings Surge, Hits Another High

3 February 2015 2:26 PM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Things are getting interesting atop the syndicated gameshow ratings scoreboard, following another series-high score for “Family Feud.”

For the week ending Jan. 25, longtime leaders “Wheel of Fortune” (7.4 household rating, 11.925 million total viewers) and “Jeopardy” (7.0, 10.896 million) remained the most popular shows in the genre overall, but the Steve Harvey-hosted “Family Feud” (6.8, 10.247 million) was in its closest position yet, according to Nielsen estimates.

The 6.8 is the best ever for “Feud,” which is produced by FremantleMedia North America and distributed by Debmar-Mercury. The gameshow grew 3% from the previous week (6.6) and was 11% higher than the same frame last season (6.1), when it surpassed the 6.0 ratings threshold for the first time since the advent of Nielsen People Meters in 1988.

Season-to-date, “Family Feud” is up double-digits across the board from last year, including 20% in households (6.0 vs. 5.0).

In the key syndication demo of women 25-54 last week, “Family Feud” (series-high 3.6) towered over both “Wheel of Fortune” (2.7) and »
