'Nightmare Before Christmas' director joins 'A Tale Dark & Grimm'

17 October 2013 1:03 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - Movie News news »

Henry Selick will direct A Tale Dark & Grimm.

The Nightmare Before Christmas director has joined FilmNation's live action adaptation of Adam Gidwitz's book, reports Screen Daily.

The film will be based on the retellings of the most dark and disturbing of the Grimm Fairy Tales.

"I remain completely enraptured by Adam Gidwitz's marvellous book A Tale Dark & Grimm," said Selick.

"It's a hilarious, deeply inventive tale about survival in the world of fairy tales and what it takes to forgive one's parents."

Selick has also worked on Neil Gaiman's Coraline, James and the Giant Peach and Monkeybone.

He entered a four-film deal with Disney and Pixar in 2010, but the contract was terminated before the first movie was completed.

Selick has most recently been working on The Shadow King, which was originally intended to be one of his Disney films. »

The brilliant Henry Selick is to take on A Tale Dark & Grimm...

Henry Selick is one of the planet's most underappreciated movie directors. Given that he's directed Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, the wonderful James And The Giant Peach and the flat-out brilliant Coraline, you'd think that news of a new project of his would be reason to bring out the marching band. But sadly, news that he's taking on Adam Gidwitz's A Tale Dark & Grimm appears to have been met with not too much noise. Thus, we intend to make some.

Selick actually has two films on the go at the moment now. The first is The Shadow King, a stop motion project that was in development at Disney, but has now been picked up by K5 International. Selick has written the script for this one too, a story of a »

Henry Selick To Direct Live Action Fairy Tale Feature A Tale Dark & Grimm

16 October 2013 5:08 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Henry Selick is primarily known for his work in the field of stop-motion animation, having previously directed features like Coraline, James and the Giant Peach and The Nightmare Before Christmas, but now, for the first time since 2001's Monkeybone, the filmmaker is ready to dive back into the world of live-action. According to Screen Daily, Selick is now attached to direct A Tale Dark & Grimm, a new feature based on the book by author Adam Gidwitz and illustrator Hugh D'Andrade. A twist on some the most beloved classic fairy tales, the book follows Hansel and Gretel as their go from their own Grimm tale to eight others. Along the way they must face off against witches, dragons and demons, and in doing so learn the real truth behind the myths. Coraline Director to Give Kids a Scare Again with A Tale Dark & Grimm

16 October 2013 12:38 PM, PDT | kidspickflicks | See recent kidspickflicks news »

Filmnation has set Henry Selick (Coraline, The Nightmare Before Christmas) to direct A Tale Dark & Grimm. Based on Adam Gidwitz' book of the same title, A Tale Dark & Grimm is said to be just as funny as it is scary. It's about two kids who leave their own dark fairy tale and find themselves in eight other equally scary stories - it highlights just how gruesome the original fairy tales were written. Selick helped adapt the screenplay along with Jon Gunn and John W. Mann (the writing duo also wrote the upcoming movies B.O.O., Magic 8 Ball and The Nutcracker).

While Selick is best known for his animated work (including James and the Giant Peach), he has directed a live-action movies before - the Brendan Fraser-starrer Monkeybone.

Interesting, the illustrator for the book, "A Tale Dark & Grimm" said he was instructed to make the artwork "Coraline-ish. »

Watch: Brendan Fraser Hops On the Kickstarter Bandwagon In Hilarious Onion Spoof

20 June 2013 12:31 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

With his resume, cover letter, jelly beans and copy of "Monkeybone" in hand, Brendan Fraser is off to win the hearts of his fans via Kickstarter. Or at least he is in this new video from The Onion. America's Finest News Source is once again taking aim at the crowdfunding site. Kickstarter's track record -- some with happy endings (we're looking at you, "Veronica Mars" and Zach Braff), others not so much -- has made it one of the web's most buzzed about sites, not to mention an easy target for publications like The Onion. Case in point, their latest faux-news story, starring a dumbed down Brendan Fraser with a regrettably small grasp for how crowdfunding operates. The story follows Fraser's misguided media blitz as he attempts to fund a nameless, plot-less project that he promises will be "a good, fun movie." Were the project real, we only hope it »

The First Image For 'The Shadow King' Comes Into The Light

6 February 2013 7:27 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Henry Selick really doesn't get the credit he deserves.  Most people still seem to think that Tim Burton directed The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Selick's other films (which have been strong, other then the abysmal MonkeyBone) didn't have the impact that they should have.  Despite the fact that stop motion films usually do decent business, Disney canned Shademaker, his next planned project.  He isn't taking that lying down, though, because he's now working on a film called The Shadow King, and what we've seen has been awesome. »
