A gang of three runs wild
4 March 2015 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Come cani arrabbiati" (1976), directed by Mario Imperioli, is also known as "Like Rabid Dogs" and "Like Wild Dogs". This is not to be confused with the 1974 "Rabid Dogs" directed by Mario Bava. These are both in the poliziotteschi genre.

This movie has been released in an excellent DVD, but it's expensive. The movie contains several very violent scenes and a good deal of female nudity. The IMDb rating of 6.6 is about right.

The movie tells the story of two young men and a girl, in their twenties and from wealthy families, who run wild in robberies, rape and murders. Their leader is Cesare Barro who has absorbed his father's thoroughly amoral, egoistic and nihilistic philosophy. The equally brutal female is Annarita Graputto, and the third member is Luis La Torra. The film doesn't hold back in showing them committing their crimes, and they gloat about them because the police are so ineffective in trapping them. The two main cops are Jean-Pierre Sabagh and Paola Senatore. They try but they mostly bumble. In one sequence, Senatore becomes bait, posing as a prostitute who has been with Barro's father. The gang picks her up and almost rapes her, with Sabagh very late in showing up to rescue her. Lots of tension here because earlier the gang did kill another prostitute used by Barro's father.

The film doesn't over-sensationalize either the violence or nudity. It doesn't go to excess, but neither does it hold back. There is tension in the directing and careful photography, while in some sense there is a matter-of-fact or adult quality about it all without losing the sense of Italian energy and creativity in these kinds of films. Filmmakers could let themselves go at this time and they did. They could focus a film like this on the bad guys and ineffectual police and it sold because the real-world social background was actually so turbulent. The story is not itself amoral, despite its focus. Neither does it resort to a moralistic climax. Its climactic scenes come from other surprising directions.
