BAFTA are very well known for their extravagant award ceremonies, but did you also know that they have an entire network committed to helping new film-making enthusiasts break into the industry of their dreams? The website ‘BAFTA Guru’ is full to bursting with information from those in the business giving advice on how to get into the business. To go along with this the company also host several events throughout the year which feature a prominent figure giving an intimate Q and A.

We were lucky enough to attend the third and final lecture in their screenwriters season, with the fantastic Steven Knight. The previous two talks were with James Schamus and Emma Thompson. He hasn’t forgotten his televisual roots though and has scripted both series of Peaky Blinders, which stars Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy.

The full event write-up will be up on the site later this week but we had to bring you the news that Knight knows exactly how he wants to end the show which has just started it’s second series. Spoiler avoiders be warned, Knight wasn’t shy about sharing his views on where the show is going:

Locke Blu-ray Review

20 August 2014 10:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Director: Steven Knight

Starring: Tom Hardy, Olivia Colman, Ruth Wilson, Andrew Scott, Ben Daniels, Tom Holland, Bill Milner,

Running Time: 85 minutes

Certificate: 15

Extras: Making Of

There have probably been easier films to pitch than this 90 minute car journey in which Tom Hardy discusses concrete. Although hardly an exciting premise in terms of story, the idea of seeing the powerhouse that is Tom Hardy completely alone on screen for the duration of an entire film is quite an intriguing one. From Steven Knight, the director of Hummingbird, writer of such brilliant films as Dirty Pretty Things and Eastern Promises, as well as being the creator of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, Locke is a stripped down exercise in minamalist cinema.

The film sees Hardy as the eponymous Locke, a man in charge of a big building project who decides to attend his one night stand of 7 months ago who is now having their child. »

Film Review: ‘The Hundred-Foot Journey’

25 July 2014 5:12 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Beef bourguignon or tandoori goat? Career success or family loyalty? You can actually have it all, according to “The Hundred-Foot Journey,” a culture-clash dramedy that presents itself as the most soothing brand of cinematic comfort food. As such, this genteel, overlong adaptation of Richard C. Morais’ 2010 novel about two rival restaurants operating in a sleepy French village is not without its pleasures — a high-energy score by A.R. Rahman, exquisite gastro-porn shot by Linus Sandgren, the winningly barbed chemistry of Helen Mirren and Om Puri — all prepared to exacting middlebrow specifications and ensured to go down as tastily and tastefully as possible. With the formidable backing of producers Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey, the DreamWorks concoction should cater to a broad array of arthouse appetites, particularly among those viewers who embraced the similar East-meets-West fusion cuisine of “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.”

Join Digital Spy for our live blog of night one below, complete with Power Trip theme and host Emma Willis dressed like a 1970s BBC Two futuristic satire on fascism/Sexy Sailor* (*delete as appropriate).

23:31And that is that - tune back in tomorrow for more from the Bb Power Trip house, including the injection of six new housemates. See you then!

23:29Suitcase time! But only the "Power Housemate" our Pauline will get hers. I wonder if that will drive a wedge between her and her power-less peers...?

Chris Tarrant: 'Dad was my closest friend'

The former Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? host has written a moving account of his father's war diary. Now more than ever, after having a mini-stroke himself, Tarrant wishes he could have talked to the decorated officer about his painful experiences

While Chris Tarrant was preparing for his mother's funeral in 2012, her house was burgled. She had been so house-proud that it broke his heart to see the windows smashed and footmarks all over her immaculate worktops. "I felt that everything in my parents' world had been defiled. But one positive thing came out of it. The burglars had ripped open Dad's beautiful old desk, which he had kept locked for as long as I can remember. And as I sorted through it, I spotted an old diary, dating back to 1944. For the first time, I had his own record of his wartime experiences."

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore Become ‘Blended’ in New Romantic Comedy

23 May 2014 5:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Usually after a date goes wrong the couple go their separate ways with the avowed intention of never seeing each other again. But according to the new Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore comedy it seems such people are missing a trick, as you can use it as a springboard to get a whole bunch of free stuff. Posing as a happy man and wife in order to qualify for a holiday at a luxury resort, it isn’t long before the chemistry starts to flow and the former car crash daters fall in love for real without the need for pina coladas or the act of getting caught in the rain. This is the premise for Blended, the pair’s third movie together and the first to reunite them with the director who started their onscreen partnership in The Wedding Singer back in 1998, Frank Coraci.

Interview: Director Steven Knight Clicks on ‘Locke’

1 May 2014 10:37 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Driving all night has taken on a different reality, with the invention of the mobile phone. There is no sanctuary within the confines of the automobile, which is now a rolling office or coordination tank. Writer/director Steven Knight portrays this new reality in a fascinating and unique new film called “Locke.”

Locke” is main character Ivan Locke, portrayed with intense regard by actor Tom Hardy (he was the villain Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises”). The film takes place all in Locke’s car as he drives toward a destination, and this sudden “crisis of life” is managed through his bluetooth phone receiver while he’s in the driver’s seat – which is as cutting edge a modern commentary as a film can be. The original concept was conceived by veteran screenwriter Steven Knight (“Dirty Pretty Things,” “Eastern Promises”), and it is his second major directorial effort.

Interview: Writer & Director Steven Knight On 'Locke,' Tom Hardy & Future Projects Including 'Eastern Promises 2'

One of the chief pleasures of the Göteborg International Film Festival, aside from the charming Swedishness of it all (particularly fond of the helper whose novel take on the “switch off your f*cking phone” message was to implore us not to forget to turn our phones “back on, the second you leave”), is the quality time we get to spend with our interview subjects. One of or most enjoyable meetings this time out was with screenwriter Steven Knight, whose fascinating sophomore directorial outing “Locke,” (our review from Venice is here) played the festival. Here are the fruits of our wide-ranging conversation with the “Eastern Promises,” “Dirty Pretty Things” and “Peaky Blinders” writer (who also—random trivia—devised and originally pitched “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?”), including his thoughts on writing for TV vs. film, his crowded upcoming slate and lots about “Locke” ...so we should probably give a little background. »

Has ‘American Idol’ Officially Entered Its Post-Phenom Phase?

17 January 2014 9:00 AM, PST | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

American Idol,” welcome to the next phase of your ratings life – the one in which you are no longer a red-hot phenomenon.

“Survivor” survived it, going from national magazine covers to ambling along as another mere mortal among TV shows. Now the trick will be for Fox and the media to accept the singing stalwart’s new status – and likely temper expectations accordingly.

Headlines didn’t exactly accentuate the positive regarding “Idol’s” return – including coverage in Variety charting “American Idol’s” 22% decline in key demographics versus its premiere last season. Then again, it’s always interesting to see the mighty brought down a peg or two, and after getting sand kicked in their faces, other networks can’t help but derive a measure of satisfaction from its comeuppance.

Notably, the numbers dropped on Thursday night, despite the other majors having largely gotten out of its way, including a “Big Bang Theory” rerun. »
