Thrilling French exploitation movie, 20 September 2002

The story of this French 1988 b-movie is about a female tourist who becomes an inmate of a female prison island in North Africa innocently and fights for her rights and against any kind of oppression and corruption. Nothing really new, but the usual female prison plot, but directed very well and without the usual cheap thrills of that genre. There is not much sex, not much nudity, and the well-known lesbian sex scenes and violent fights are reduced to the minimum.

Director Serge Leroy is rather interested in the story of his female hero, her feelings and her relationship to her inmate friends and a corrupt policeman who is constantly humiliating her without success. There is much more focus on the characters than in similar genre productions, and together with Marianne Basler's good performance, a calmed-down, but still very thrilling plot and the exotic settings of a lonely island, this production is worth being watched not only by exploitation movie buffs.

Released in French North America on NTSC VHS videotape......No DVD Release...., 6 January 2009

This film was released on NTSC VHS videotape in North America by DIMA Films Distribution in 1989 with the French title..... CONTRAINT PAR CORPS....It had a small distribution in Quebec and the French speaking areas of Eastern Canada and the northeastern USA....There is no DVD version......It was released in French Language with no English Subtitles.....It is no longer In Print and is rarely seen in French Canadian video stores.....the Ex-Rentals are generally poor quality and and the original tape has often been replaced........It was released with a French language jacket with a picture of Marianne Basler behind bars on the front and one color still of 4 girls showering on the back of the jacket......Directed by Serge Leroy and stars Marianne Basler, Catherine Wilkening, Tanya Lopert, Caroline Sihol, Anne Jousset, Lisette Malidor....the run time of the North American release is 1 hour 38 minutes............Contains extensive female nudity........."Catherine Wilkening's Prison Thriller..... Marianne Basler is arrested and framed for drugs when she is seen by a puritanical cop, necking with her boyfriend on a secluded beach......She is sent to an island prison where she contends with quite a bit.........."
