Blu-ray Review – Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 (2015)

17 August 2015 3:40 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2. 2015.

Directed by Andy Fickman.

Starring Kevin James, Raini Rodriguez, Neal McDonough, Daniella Alonso, David Henrie, Gary Valentine and Ana Gasteyer.

Synopsis:

After six years of keeping our malls safe, Paul Blart has earned a well-deserved vacation. He heads to Vegas with his teenage daughter before she heads off to college. But safety never takes a holiday and when duty calls, Blart answers.

Kevin James is back as Paul Blart in the sequel that nobody asked for.

I’ll be the first to admit that I didn’t mind the first film. Sure it wasn’t great but I didn’t flat out hate it either. Despite his very lackluster film career so far I do like Kevin James and think he can be funny given the right material – just look at Hitch and his years on The King of Queens. Since the first film was »

Supernatural” alum Rob Benedict has joined Showtime’s “Masters of Sex” in a recurring role for season three, Variety has learned exclusively.

The role reunites Benedict with Lizzy Caplan, who starred alongside Benedict in his superhero short film “The Sidekick,” which received a digital release on iTunes, Amazon and VOD earlier this year. The short, written by Benedict and directed by Michael J. Weithorn (“The King of Queens”), made its world premiere at Comic-Con in 2013.

Benedict and Speight are also collaborating on single-camera comedy “The Kings of Con,” which was funded through an Indiegogo campaign, raising almost three times the project’s initial $100,000 goal. The show is based on »

Is the Network TV Sitcom Dying? Ask Jim Gaffigan

17 July 2015 5:30 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Wondering why some networks have all but given up on creating new sitcoms? Maybe Jim Gaffigan knows the answer.

The stand-up comic, whose sitcom "The Jim Gaffigan Show" debuted on TV Land this week, has been promoting the show with interviews (including here, here, and here) where he explains why he took his new series to basic cable.

According to Gaffigan, each broadcast network tried to shoehorn his autobiographical series into its preferred sitcom format, with less of an eye on what would make the show unique or good and more on what would make it test well with audiences and run long enough to be sold into syndication. That's where the real money is for a TV production company -- we're talking hundreds of millions of dollars for a successful series with at least 100 episodes in its library -- but to get there, the networks apparently believe that risk-avoidance »

More than a few of their bits related to his Jewishness and her Irish Catholic upbringing, though she converted to Judaism in 1960. While Meara's 1975 CBS drama "Kate McShane" was short-lived, it earned her the first of her Emmy nominations, followed by nods for "Archie Bunker's Place" and a guest spot on "Homicide: Life on the Street. »

TV Review: ‘Weird Loners’

30 March 2015 7:30 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

If only “Weird Loners” were anywhere near as interesting as its title. Instead, this latest Fox comedy falls into that middle realm of nothing special, featuring a quartet of quirky characters, all in their mid-30s, each of whom remains single for his or her own reasons. Still, delaying marriage isn’t as shocking as it once was, just as these kinds of self-absorbed characters don’t exactly break fresh ground. Fox has enjoyed some recent successes — generating sampling of “The Last Man on Earth” — but there’s nothing here that can’t be seen executed significantly better (and every bit as timely) in any random “Seinfeld” rerun.

Indeed, after three episodes of the series, it’s still something of a struggle to come up with a clear description of it, other than to note that by the end of episode one, all four characters are living adjacent to each other in a Queens townhouse. »

Planes: Fire & Rescue Blu-Ray Review

17 February 2015 2:36 PM, PST | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

Planes: Fire & Rescue, much like the Cars sequel, spins us into an entirely new world, and though the Cars franchise sequels haven’t been quite the blockbusters Pixar might have hoped for, this broader sequel theory has made them both far better films than simpler “add-on” efforts might have managed.

Dusty finds himself out of the racing game, and quickly joins with a crew of rescue vehicles who keep an eye on a vast forest in order to contain fires. Naturally, this isn’t something that sounds like a great time to Dusty at first, but he learns that there’s a lot more to life than being in the spotlight.

This all kicks off because Dusty continually pushes himself too far, damaging a part that can’t be replaced. In a fairly obvious maneuver, he ends up crashing, and causing a fire. This leads to the airport being shut down, »
