Children's fantasy is good showcase for new stars
31 March 2002 | by (Newcastle,England) – See all my reviews

The movie is an okay fantasy comedy for kids about an obnoxious younger brother being turned into a pig, and the sister, friend and nanny traveling to Mexico to reverse the spell before the parents return. Pretty well made, with a lot of humor designed to appeal to the younger viewer. But the real attraction is the two young stars. Scarlett Johansson, seen recently in 'The Man Who Wasn't There' and 'Ghost World' gets to play a pretty ordinary teen girl, for a change, but is blossoming fast into one of the best of the younger set. As the nanny, Eva Mendes is a delight' I first saw her as Denzel Washington's girlfriend in "Training Day" but here she has better chance to show off comedic talent, dazzling beauty, and sheer screen personality. Surely she will be getting better roles in bigger films soon.
