The daughter of a United States Senator is kidnapped from her private school under the nose of her Secret Service agent Jezzie [Monica Potter]. The kidnapper is a teacher who uses the girl's habit for "passing" encrypted notes to her friend, the son of the Russian President, as a pretext for getting her away from other students to repremand her. He drugs her and flees the campus with her in tow.
The kidnapper, Mr. Soneji, contacts the famous profiler Alex Cross [Morgan Freeman] to initiate the chase he has so dramatically laid out in his mind, The Secret Service agent, Jezzie who let the kidnappers get away with her charge, Megan Rose, pleads with Cross [Freeman] to let her help retrieve the girl so she can redeem herself. They both follow the clues that allude to the famous Lindbergh kidnapping case. They realize that the kidnapped Megan is being used to lure the real intended target away from his tight security; the son of the Russian president.
Meanwhile Megan is being held on a boat and taking an active role in her own rescue, trying to escape and cleverly creating havoc. Suddenly, the kidnapper returns to find that she's gone. He immediately phones the police with a ransom demand for 10 million in diamonds. A phone booth chase scene is on!
[Even tho the agents working on the case believe that the kidnapper (Soneji) is making the ransom demand, it later turns out -- during his brief 'interview' with Alex in Jezzie's apartment -- that Soneji doesn't even know that a ransom demand has been made, OR that a payment has even taken place. Rather, he is still rather upset over the fact that the girl is gone, and it may be that he suspects that whoever now has her intends to do the girl harm in such a way that HE will be blamed for it, regardless. After all, if a ransom was NOT the original reason for the kidnapping (and publicity WAS), then why would Soneji suddenly change his mind in midstream?? It is much more likely, therefore, that the second set of kidnappers (i.e. Flannigan and DeVine) are using much of the same equipment that Soneji has been using (including the scrambler that is altering his voice so that it still comes across sounding the same, even tho it ISN'T Soneji that's doing the calling) in order to make the demand themselves, while STILL implying that Soneji, alone, is the guilty party. (This is further enhanced by the fact that Sonji does NOT correct Alex regarding the ransom amount, and -- as Alex, himself, points out -- Soneji is something of a loner. Therefore "accomplices would be beneath him". After all, they do now have the girl, instead of Soneji, and -- once the girl is dead -- they will not only be rich, but also "home free", since the authorities would STILL be looking for Soneji. Then, too, DeVine IS something of a computer expert -- just as Soneji is -- and after following Soneji around for a full year....]
Unaware that Soneji no longer has the girl, Cross is running all over Washington DC, answering phones and running through train stations with the diamonds in a thermos. For the complicated "drop", only his new partner on his tail for backup. Defeated, after having handed over the diamonds and getting no girl, the duo returns to Jezzie's apartment to discuss the case when there is a knock on the door. It's the kidnapper, Mr Soneji with a tazer! He zaps Jezzie and she falls to the floor. He draws a gun on Cross who must give up his own gun or never find out where Megan Rose is.
Soneji tries to lead Cross away, but Jezzie wakes up and stabs Soneji in the leg, allowing Cross time to load a shotgun and put an end to him. Jezzie sobs that they will never find Megan now. But Soneji has failed to react to a comment made by Cross and it becomes clear to him that the girl is no longer with Soneji.
A faintly familiar face appears in a dimly lit room and is offering food to Megan. It's another Secret Service agent from her school and she recognizes him! He leaves her in her barn location, returning to the main house. Suddenly Jezzie is through the door and her passionate kiss of the other agent, Agent Divine, reveals her to be in on the kidnap plot from the beginning! She demands to know where Megan is and is annoyed to learn she is still alive.
She asks to see the diamonds and explains that Soneji is dead and Cross had twigged on the notion that he was not the sole plotter in the kidnapping. Divine asks if she thinks Cross is onto them. Jezzie says they are not onto the two of them, and blows a hole in her boyfriend's head commenting that Cross is onto HIM.
Meanwhile Cross has timed the surveillance tapes from the day of the school kidnapping and puts it together that Agent Divine was essentially an accomplice. He runs to Jezzie's apartment and finds files on her computer that only the plotter would have!
Back at the barn, Megan tries to escape by prying up some barn siding and then hears Jezzie's voice calling for her. But Megan has barred the door with her heavy metal bed. As she begins to slide the barricade away for her rescuer to come in, she suddenly realizes that Jezzie is there alone... a strange circumstance in her mind. Megan becomes suspicious and Jezzie goes nuts blowing live rounds through the barn siding at the girl. Behind a support beam, the girl escapes the rounds, but Jezzie has another clip and climbs into the hayloft for a better vantage point. Megan quickly scrambles her way out of the plank she has been pulling up. The short chase ends with Cross arriving just in time, to pull the girl to safety and put a round through Jezzies heart. A promise to return her to her parents, puts smiles on all around.
