When they meet on the island Smiling Jack tells Joe that he was hired by some men to find them but that he can't take them back because he is running low on fuel and the radio in his plane doesn't work. The movie leaves open the question of whether any of this is true. However, in the directors commentary, John Sayles reveals the truth in the instructions which he gave to Kris Kristofferson, who played Smiling Jack. Sayles says that everything Smiling Jack says is true, with the single exception being that Jack's radio actually works. Furthermore, Sayles revealed that when Jack leaves the island he is unsure of how he should proceed and whether he should tell his employers the trio's location, or whether he should return to rescue them.
