...Wtf were you thinking? by J.A. Hamilton After listening to my friend Marcey.s Super Podcast last night, featuring her and Joblo.s Tony Lang discussing their top five Wtf moments in movies, I decided to put off my original plan for this week.s column and go with some of My favorites instead. It.s hard to put them in a distinct order (all but number one that is), but here we go. Number five would have to be The Beach, starring Leo DiCaprio as a dude who ends up on a Lord... »

Danny Boyle's next pic announced

5 November 2009 12:40 AM, PST | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

Director Danny Boyle has picked his next movie to make. After his Slumdog Millionaire took home eight Oscars this year (including statues for Best Picture and Best Director), the 28 Days Later/The Beach/Trainspotting maestro will make 127 Hours for Fox Searchlight, the same studio he pacted on Millionaire with.

The movie is based on the real-life account of mountain climber Aron Ralston and the incredible act of survival he undertook when trapped alone in the wilderness back in 2003. Ralston had been attempting to climb a canyon in Utah by himself when a boulder came free and pinned his right forearm under it. For five days he awaited rescue and sipped the little supply of water he had. Realizing that no one knew where he was, Ralston carved his name, birthdate and presumed date of death into the rock face and then videotaped a final message to his family. With no »

Has Alex Garland Written The Script For Judge Dredd?

9 September 2009 11:29 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Another film version of Judge Dredd has been kicking about the infamous development hell for about half a decade or so. In December of last year we got news that Danny Boyle’s (Slumdog Millionaire) DNA production shingle was going to be bringing a new Judge Dredd to the big screen.

Now we have news from the film’s illustrator and comic book artist “Jock” that screenwriter and novelist Alex Garland (The Beach, 28 Days Later and Sunshine) has penned the script.

In Janurary we reported that Jock had delivered some concept art for the film but at that point there was no script. Slash Film has been following Jock’s Tweets and yesterday he apparently tweeted:

“working through script visuals for Judge Dredd movie. Alex Garland writes a great script.”

This would seem to imply that Garland has either completed scripting duties on the film or at the very least »

Judge Dredd Movie Gets A Writer

9 September 2009 9:19 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

It was back in January when this site (formerly known as Original Sharp Says) announced that Danny Boyle’s DNA Films had picked up the rights to the mega Brit sci-fi series – Judge Dredd. At the time Boyle sadly made it abundantly clear that regardless of his companies involvement, he would not be stepping in to direct.

Since then, all has been silent on the Judge Dredd project, until now. Kevin Smith, during his 24 hours tweet-a-thon spoke to comic book artist Mark “Jock” Simpson about the project, and once again is seems like Twitter is surly becoming the #1 source for breaking news:

@jock4twenty working through script visuals for Judge Dredd movie. Alex Garland writes a great script.

Alex Garland, writer of “The Beach” and “28 Days Later” is now apparently also the writer on DNA Films’ new Judge Dredd project, not only that but word has reached my ears that »

Alex Garland Is Writing Judge Dredd

9 September 2009 12:16 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Perhaps this shouldn't be so much of a surprise, given that Judge Dredd is a project nestling under the wing of Danny Boyle's DNA films. But we're still ludicrously excited by the news, picked up from Twitter by MTV's Splashpage, that Alex Garland is working on a draft of the script.Garland previously wrote The Beach, 28 Days Later, and Sunshine for Boyle, and his involvement was confirmed via tweet by British comics artist Mark "Jock" Simpson, who has worked extensively on Dredd strips for 2000Ad and has been coming up with concept art for the projected new film. "Working through script visuals for Judge Dredd movie. Alex Garland writes a great script," is the full missive. The dystopian police-state satire has been running in the weekly 2000Ad comic since 1977, and has also had its own monthly 'Megazine' since 1990. Lest we forget (or perhaps we should), a 1995 film attempt starred Sylvester Stallone and Rob Schneider, »

Alex Garland Takes On Judge Dredd

8 September 2009 10:15 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

It.s easy to forget that Alex Garland started out his career as a hot young author who was heralded by many for his debut novel, The Beach (no, not the so-so movie that Danny Boyle would later direct). Now he.s somewhat abandoned the novel medium in favor of writing movies (28 Days Later, Sunshine). That.s one way to avoid having to live up to the hype. Change jobs! Now according to comic artist Jock.s Twitter, it looks as though Garland has been hired on to write the reboot of Judge Dredd. For those who don.t know, Judge Dredd is a sweet comic about a world where the powers of judges, police, juries, and executioners have all been put into the hands of one group of men. One of which is Judge Dredd. The reboot has been in the works for ages now, and it.s likely »

Leo’s Crash Diet For Inception!

28 August 2009 4:29 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Leonardo DiCaprio has reportedly embarked on a new crash diet and exercise regime in order to lose an incredible 30lbs for his new film, Inception.

The actor wants to get in shape for a fight sequence in Inception, a futuristic film about a CEO-type crook involved in a blackmail scandal.

Inception is due for cinema release next summer. Directed by Chris Nolan, it also stars Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Marion Cotillard, Michael Caine and Cillian Murphy. The first trailer has just been released, and gives little, if anything away about the actual plot of the movie. Looks like Nolan is trying to keep this one well under wraps. Despite the supposed plot leaks earlier this week, it’s officially being described simply as a ‘contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind.’

It’s not that unusual for celebs to embark on strict diet regimes for movies. »

American Thoughts On The British Film Industry

31 July 2009 10:52 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Kevin Coll is a Memphis based marketing guru and Editor in Chief of Memphis-based film news site Fused Film.

So when Craig asked me to do a guest post on FilmShaft about American thoughts on the British film industry, how could I resist? First off let me start by saying that I speak on my own behalf and not the rest of America. I say this because if what I say is misconstrued or taken out of context to be offensive I do not want the rest of America to suffer!

So where to start? How about the tradition of great British actors who have come to be household names in American cinema? Perhaps the most recognizable of names for me is Peter O’Toole who is in my favorite movie of all time, “Lawrence of Arabia” (and mine in “High Spirits – Craig). One of the biggest problems I have about Hollywood, »

McGregor Ready To End Feud With Boyle

26 May 2009 9:01 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Ewan McGregor has reached out to end his long rift with director Danny Boyle - nearly a decade after the Oscar winner dropped him from a movie.

The pair formed a close friendship after collaborating on 1996 movie Trainspotting, and Boyle promised McGregor the lead role in 2000 blockbuster The Beach. But studio bosses pressured him to cast a more famous name and the role went to Leonardo DiCaprio instead.

Speaking back in 2005, McGregor accused Boyle of "betraying" him, telling Playboy magazine, "Boyle and his people didn't treat me very well.

"It wasn't just about The Beach - it was that they were dishonest with me about it. It cost us our friendship. I had the rug pulled out from under our feet... It was a betrayal."

Four years on, the Scottish star is ready to reach out following Boyle's success at the 2009 Academy Awards with Slumdog Millionaire.

He tells Moviefone.com, "I haven't spoken to Danny for years, I'm afraid. But I thought (Slumdog's Oscar success) was very well deserved; I liked Slumdog very much. I thought it was an excellent film, and it was nice to see him getting all those accolades. It was great." »

Weekend Movie News Wrap Up: May 17, 2009

17 May 2009 2:49 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

This week:

Tom Hanks is the box office champion; Terry Gilliam kills Don Quixote…again; Spider-Man has a new Green Goblin (on stage); the Basterds are online; Toy Story 3 is moving Up; Ewan McGregor won’t be Trainspotting and who are the Six Suspects?

Box Office

Tom Hanks charged to the top of the box office with Angels and Demons. The sequel to The DaVinci Code grossed $48 million over the weekend, which is down from the $77 million opening for the first film. Having said that, reviews are better and the audience is more mature so it might have legs to make it profitable. Expect a third movie - but might they replace Hanks with someone younger and cheaper next time?

Star Trek showed great legs with a second weekend take of $42 million and a drop of less than 45% from its opening weekend. With a total gross of $147 million it »

The Top 15 Favorite Gay Reality Stars

1 April 2009 6:32 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

While the number of gay/bisexual characters on scripted television has, at best, held steady over the past decade (and doesn’t exactly represent the diversity of gay men in the real world), it’s a different story when it comes to the depiction of gay men on reality television. Indeed, along with the explosion of reality programming has come a dramatic increase in the numbers and types of gay and bisexual men appearing on our television screens.

From the groundbreaking appearance of Pedro Zamora on The Real World: San Francisco to the current seasons of The Amazing Race, Survivor: Tocantins, and Make Me a Supermodel, there is a breadth of gay men that is quite frankly astounding.

In fact, there have now been so many gay and bisexual men on reality television that we decided to let AfterElton.com readers choose their favorites of all time. Here »

"Slumdog Millionaire" Blu-ray review. Never has a film been so deserved of awards such as this masterful creation.

29 March 2009 | Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news »

"Slumdog Millionaire" reviewby Peter Dimako, Editor I recall being asked a few times if I had a favorite film and I would always reply that it’s an impossible question to answer as there are a few greats through many generations. “Slumdog Millionaire” is, to this date, the motion picture that has touched me most. This is the greatest film I have ever had the privilege to view. When interviewing Danny Boyle for his other gem “Millions” back in the days when we were located in Atlanta, I was most impressed with how comfortable Mr. Boyle makes one feel and how interested he is in you as a person. He focuses on you and shows real interest, listening carefully to your answer as if you matter as much as he. Perhaps this was largely due to my South African upbringing and family history. In any case, he has a calmness »

India tops list of popular movie locations turned holiday hotspots

“Screenspiration”, that’s the new term being used to describe the phenomenon of folks visiting places due to seeing it in a film. Here at Boxwish, we’re trying it on for size and have to say we like the feel of it. Not that the notion is anything novel, we’ve been banging on about visiting places as seen onscreen for ages now. However the craze is sweeping the country as according to new research 34 per cent of Brits have been so inspired, with India voted the most popular destination thanks to Oscar-winner Slumdog Millionaire (learn more about the film’s Mumbai setting here). What other international hotspots made the list? Click over for details.

The survey was conducted by Opinium on behalf of TravelSupermarket.com and over 2,000 British adults answered. The results found that age plays a factor, with 50 per cent of those aged under 30 more likely to »

The Weekly Wrap-Up: March 1-7, 2009

7 March 2009 2:50 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

March definitely came in like a lion this year at Dread Central. We put up more news during the past week than in any recent period I can recall. Which is proof positive that despite the economic problems around the globe, the outlook for film projects -- including those of the horror variety -- is rosy and robust.

In fact, according to the Calgary Herald, February 2009 generated more than $770 million at the box office (with Friday the 13th and Coraline contributing $59 million and $59.5, respectively), which in adjusted dollars makes it the most lucrative February on record — ever. Those who work in the industry can take some comfort in the fact that five of the last seven financial crunches fueled big Hollywood business. So what can we expect from genre filmmakers in the near future to help stoke that movie biz boom?

Slumdog's Danny Boyle to direct next James Bond

6 March 2009 12:22 AM, PST | India.com | See recent India.com news »

The Sun is reporting Barbara Broccoli, the head of the 007 franchise at Eon Productions, is one of a series of major players said to have approached Danny Boyle in recent days.

The report goes on to say Boyle is also good friends with Bond producer Callum McDougal, with whom he filmed the 2000 film The Beach.

Unfortunately, as logical as it sounds considering Boyle’s stock is now on the rise following the recent Oscar success of Slumdog Millionaire, the Sun is a gossipy UK rag typically proven to be wrong.

The quote from the Sun reports a source saying, “[Boyle] has been offered the chance to direct the 23rd Bond film by Barbara. The Eon team love his vision and think that it would work perfectly for the new look of Bond.
