A new picture of Christian Bale emerges in a just-released biography by his former publicist and assistant, Harrison Cheung. Christian Bale: The Inside Story of the Darkest Batman, published May 29 on BenBella, reveals an actor who fought desperately to emerge from the world of independent British cinema into a complex, often incorrigible but above-all, ambitious global superstar.
HuffPost Entertainment read the book and found the following 14 details to be of particular interest. Some of these tidbits were previously covered in the media, but others -- like which of his characters he most identifies with -- appear to be new information. Before reading, consider one important note: Cheung once worked for the "Dark Knight Rises" star and no longer does. The following items are all taken from a book that is written from the former publicist's point of view. Cheung writes in the book that he was never actually paid for his years of service, »

Though we're not exactly familiar with the source material, when the first trailer for the adaptation of the British TV series The Sweeney showed up, our interest was somewhat piqued. Ray Winstone and Ben Drew (aka rapper Plan B) lead the film as Detective Inspector Jack Regan and Detective Sergeant George Carter respectively, two members of the "Flying Squad," a branch of the Metropolitan Police specializing in armed robbery and violent crime in London. Now the two are front and center in leather jackets and wielding guns in the first UK quad poster for the film that also stars Hayley Atwell and Damian Lewis. Here's the first poster for Nick Love's adaptation of The Sweeney from HeyUGuys: Nick Love (The Football Factory) directed The Sweeney and co-wrote the screenplay with John Hodge (Trainspotting, The Beach) based on 1970's British TV series of the same name. Nick Love, well known for writing and directing the likes of The Football Factory and The Firm, is back behind the camera with The Sweeney, based on the original UK ’70s TV programme of the same name.
Ray Winstone and Ben Drew (a.k.a. Plan B) take the lead, with the ever-rising talents of Hayley Atwell and Damian Lewis supporting.
The first trailer made its way online early last month, and now the film’s official Facebook has debuted the first official poster (succeeding the white/blue promo poster that surfaced a while back), and it gets the image of the film across nicely.
I also enjoy that the official website (which currently redirects to Facebook) is www.yourenicked.com. Classic.

The Empire in Leicester Square played host (alongside four other cinemas around the country) to the third annual British Independent Film Festival last weekend, and we were there to catch the world premiere of British high-octane horror Airborne on the Friday evening, as well as a trio of films screened the following day.
As the title suggests, the festival celebrates independent filmmaking and the choice of features this year represented an encouraging mix of genres (the full list of films can be found on the festival’s website.)
Boasting a number of familiar faces from popular genre films of the past (including ‘Last Crusade’ villain Julian Glover and a certain farm boy-turned Jedi Knight) Airborne follows a group of misfit passengers on a night flight to New York who get more than they bargained for during their stormy journey.
A number of stars from the film were in attendance on the Friday, »

A stage production by Britain’s National Theater of director Danny Boyle’s version of Frankenstein will be screened in more than 200 U.S. theaters on June 6-7 at 7:00 p.m. local time. It is Boyle’s first major effort as a stage director in nearly 30 years. His films include Slumdog Millionaire (for which he won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for best director), 127 Hours, The Beach, Millions, and Trainspotting. Actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller, who shared this year’s Olivier Award for best actor for their performances in the Nick Dear adaptation of the Mary Shelley tale, will play Victor Frankenstein and the Creature, reversing roles on the second night of the performance. The two-hour-long production is being beamed to theaters via Ncm Media Networks’ Fathom Entertainment. »

With 'Hunger Games' helmer Gary Ross leaving the franchise, MTV Movies staffers make their picks for his successor.

"The Hunger Games" fandom was dealt a Cato-sized blow Monday when director Gary Ross confirmed rumors that he would not direct the franchise's follow-up "Catching Fire" (set for a November 22, 2013, release).
"Despite recent speculation in the media, and after difficult but sincere consideration, I have decided not to direct 'Catching Fire,' " Ross said in his statement. "As a writer and a director, I simply don't have the time I need to write and prep the movie I would have wanted to make because of the fixed and tight production schedule."
With roughly 19 months to cast, film and cut the sequel, Lionsgate is no doubt in hot pursuit of a worthy contender to Ross' throne. »

Near, far, wherever you are, you've probably heard that 1997's Titanic starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio as new lovers on the doomed vessel is returning to theaters this weekend in 3-D. James Cameron's epic romantic disaster film became the highest-grossing movie of all time (until the director's own Avatar) and made huge stars out of its two young leads. Fifteen years after Titanic last sailed on-screen, the careers of both DiCaprio and Winslet are still very much afloat. DiCaprio—who became a reluctant teen heartthrob because of Titanic—had a tougher time shaking the legions of screaming girls and being taken seriously as an actor (see The Beach, for which earned a Razzie nomination for Worst Actor). In Steven Spielberg's Catch Me If...

The news of a big screen adaptation of the British TV series The Sweeney is obviously a bigger deal across the pond than it is in the United States, but we've been keeping an eye on the project (with a developing sequel) because it features of Ray Winstone and Ben Drew (aka rapper Plan B) as Detective Inspector Jack Regan and Detective Sergeant George Carter respectively, two members of the "Flying Squad," a branch of the Metropolitan Police specializing in armed robbery and violent crime in London. Hayley Atwell and Damian Lewis also star in the film and now we have the first trailer straight out of the UK. Even though most of his spoken words are indiscernible, actor Ray Winstone has an undeniable presence on screen. He’ll get to show off again this year in a new UK buddy cop drama titled The Sweeney, based on the television series across the pond. He teams with Ben Drew aka rapper Plan B and we can also see a peek at Homeland star Damien Lewis and Captain America‘s Haley Atwell in the first trailer from Digital Spy.
It looks like your fairly generic British crime film, but even as misguided as something like London Boulevard was, Winstone is almost always entertaining. Director Nick Love also helmed the buzzed about sports drama The Football Factory and executive produced Nicolas Winding Refn‘s Bronson. With a script from John Hodge (Shallow Grave, The Beach), let’s hope this one lives up to already having a sequel in development. Check it out below. »

Jason Solomons on all the gossip from Tilda Swinton's Film on the Rocks festival in Thailand
Realm of the Six Senses
Film festivals come in all themes and sizes and give prizes from Golden Bears to Audience Awards – but if there were an award for the world's most exclusive, it would surely go to Film on the Rocks, inaugurated and curated by Tilda Swinton and Palme d'Or winner Apichatpong Weerasethakul last week at the blissful Six Senses resort on Koh Yao Noi, a tiny island off Phuket in Thailand. I'm not really sure what it was I just attended in the line of journalistic duty – "Castaways," Swinton called the assembled guests. "Not quite a festival but a mind orgy," preferred Apichatpong (a national hero following his 2010 win at Cannes with Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives). A diverse selection of guests included British director Joanna Hogg (if »

SXSW is barely 24 hours away from starting (catch up with part one and part two of our preview pieces here), and at this point, it's important to be reminded that one of the things that makes the festival unique is a particular focus on the crossover between music and film, something that's been a special interest of ours since the very earliest days of The Playlist. SXSW doesn't just have a whole sidebar dedicated to music documentaries (with this year's batch including films centered on LCD Soundsystem, Paul Simon and Big Star), and a music festival that runs alongside, but the films screened seem to attract a disproportionate number of scores by indie and rock musicians.
And with more and more names who broke out from the pop and rock world -- from veteran composers like Danny Elfman and Clint Mansell to newbies like Trent Reznor and The Chemical Brothers -- moving into composition, »

It was the ultimate concert. Grammy-watchers enjoyed a front row-seat view as the music industry's biggest voices celebrated music's biggest night Sunday on the stage of Los Angeles's Staples Center. And while Adele, the night's top honoree, wowed with a perfect-pitch performance of her award-winning anthem "Rolling in the Deep," and Katy Perry brought the fire with her new tune - not to mention Jennifer Hudson's heartfelt tribute to the late Whitney Houston - several other show-stopping moments took place throughout the 54th Annual Grammy Awards. For those who might have missed them, People.com breaks down the night's most memorable performances. »

We salute 50 of the finest contemporary films with budgets of less than $10million. Did your favourite make the list…?
In this age of multi-million dollar blockbusters and eye-watering fees paid to some actors, you may forget we’re in an age of austerity. However, for the vast majority of the film industry, there is no huge vat of money, nor has there ever been. But this hasn’t stopped some of the finest films of recent years being made on a relative shoe-string, and in some cases, quite literally with a shoe-string.
I reckon filmmaking thrives at the sharp end, and low budgets mean more creative ideas, and as a result, more engaging films. To prove this, here is a list of what I consider to be the finest 50 contemporary films made for under $10 million. There is a breathtaking array of recognisable genre pictures in here, too, with budgets rangin »

Directed by: Lynne Ramsey
Cast: Tilda Swinton, Ezra Miller, John C. Reilly
Running Time: 1 hr 52 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: January 27, 2012 (Chicago)
Plot: A mother (Swinton) must deal with her extremely difficult son Kevin (Miller). To make it worse, she’s the only one who sees him as difficult.
Who’S It For?: Fans of Swinton will find more reason to praise her with this movie. Anyone concerned that this will just be another dramatic movie about a school tragedy aftermath will be proven extremely wrong. If you think you can handle such a topic’s discussion, this movie is basically a must-see.
Overall
We Need to Talk About Kevin deals with a tragedy, but it does not get into the weepier aspects of facing such an emotional burden. It instead goes much deeper into elements of inherent evil, with a title character that is almost over-the-top sinister. »

Morse is back – but in a prequel starring this man as the young inspector. Can he escape from John Thaw's shadow? Laura Barnett searches for clues on the shoot
It's early morning at a ghostly disused Raf base, and I have just been transported back to the 1960s. A woman struts past me in a green mini-dress, hair backcombed into a beehive. A vintage blue and cream bus sits in a car park. A man in a serge suit and a beige mackintosh sits on a folding chair, smoking a cigarette. Through all this strolls a tall, loose-limbed young man with piercing blue eyes and a strangely familiar expression.
The expression – avuncular yet determined, confused yet confident – is familiar because it's the default expression of Inspector Morse, the opera-loving solver of shire-based crimes. But Morse has not come back from the dead: the loose-limbed young man is actor Shaun Evans, »
