Dread Central's Best and Worst of 2011

27 December 2011 7:06 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Well, folks, 2011 is officially in the can, and surprisingly it wasn't such a horrendous year. It was definitely better than 2010, which was a huge step up from the putrid 2009. We laughed, we applauded, we were left dumbstruck, and of course we were infuriated. Read on for our cheers and jeers!

Now, with a fresh movie-watching start before us, we're taking our usual yearly look back at the good, the bad, the Wtf, and everything in between.

And don't be lazy by just reading along! Get off of your asses and give us your lists in the comments section below. We wanna hear from you if only to compare notes. Lots and lots of notes.

Speaking of notes, the most common complaint we've heard over the years is that we don't have one definitive list representing Dread Central as a whole so for 2011 we dropped everyone's choices in the blender, hit puree, »

Seann William Scott Knocks Everybody Out In Great New Trailer For Goon

23 December 2011 1:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

We’ve seen some brilliant things from Seann William Scott’s next movie, the upcoming ice hockey comedy Goon, in the past few months, most recently including the film’s first UK trailer and poster as well as an awesome clip from the film just a few days ago.

Along with Scott, the film also stars Jay Baruchel, Liev Schreiber, Alison Pill, Kim Coates, and Scott’s American Pie co-star, Eugene Levy (who he’ll be returning alongside in that franchise for American Reunion come April next year).

We’ve now got a great new trailer to share with you, courtesy of iTunes Movie Trailers, via ComingSoon.net, with plenty of awesome new footage from the film and lots of Scott beating the hell out of everybody in sight. It’s a green band trailer this time around, so if you’re still at work, this should lift your spirits »

‘Goon’ Green-Band Trailer and Clip – In Canada, They Even Beat the Crap Out of Each Other Politely

22 December 2011 12:00 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

[1] Twelve years after the release of American Pie, I still associate Seann William Scott most strongly with the role of obnoxious, douchey Stifler. But in Michael Dowse's hockey comedy Goon, Scott stars as Stifler's polar opposite: "Doug, the nicest guy you'll ever fight." Scripted by Jay Baruchel and Evan Goldberg, the film follows a bouncer whose fighting skills land him a spot on a minor league hockey team, despite the fact that he can't even skate. Writer Baruchel does double duty as Doug's best pal, while Alison Pill stars as Doug's love interest and Liev Schreiber as Doug's nemesis. Watch the new green-band trailer and a clip from the film after the jump. The green-band trailer differs from the red-band trailer [2] released last month mostly in that it's less offensive, with less cursing, less lewd gesturing from Baruchel, and less blood. Happily, the omissions don't take away from what »

Apple iTunes released the upcoming sports comedy green band trailer for “Goon.” Here is the synopsis: Labelled an outcast by his brainy family, a bouncer overcomes long odds to lead a team of under performing misfits to semi-pro hockey glory, beating the crap out of everything that stands in his way. The film stars Seann William Scott (“Role Models,” “American Pie”), Jay Baruchel (“How to Train Your Dragon,” “Tropic Thunder”), Liev Schreiber (“X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” “Salt”), Alison Pill (“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” “Milk”), Kim Coates (“Silent Hill,” “Resident Evil: Afterlife”) and Eugene Levy (“Best in Show,” “A Mighty Wind”). The film is directed by Michael Dowse (“It’s All Gone Pete Tong,” “Fubar”). The screenplay is penned by Baruchel and Evan Goldberg (“Pineapple Express,” “Superbad”), which is based on the Adam Frattasio and Doug Smith’s novel “Goon: The True Story of an Unlikely Journay into Minor League Hockey. »

The Inbetweeners: 'Our movie's success doesn't make any logical sense'

17 December 2011 4:07 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Blake Harrison, Joe Thomas, James Buckley and Simon Bird on the year they made the most successful British comedy movie in history

In an early scene of The Inbetweeners Movie, released in August, audiences met a central character wearing boxer shorts and scuba-diving equipment, noisily pleasuring himself into an open packet of wafer-thin ham. There followed 90 minutes of similarly vulgar surprises (intercourse with the elderly, the nasal ingestion of poo), but the film's biggest shock, its most convention-rattling stunner, was saved until last. Within a month of release, The Inbetweeners Movie – a feature-length spin-off of a sitcom broadcast on E4 from 2008 to 2010 – had become the most successful British comedy in cinema history.

"Hard to compute," says Blake Harrison, one of the film's four stars. "Surreal," says Joe Thomas. "If you thought about it too deeply you'd drive yourself mental," says James Buckley. "It certainly doesn't make any logical sense," says Simon Bird. »

"How I Met Your Mother" star Alyson Hannigan is pregnant again. According to Us Weekly, her rep has confirmed what was very obvious in a recent photograph. Her daughter with "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel" co-star Alexis Denisof is about to be a big sister.

The two, who met while filming "Buffy" have a 2-year-old daughter, Satyana. "Alyson is thrilled to be pregnant!" a source tells Us. "She's been wearing baggy clothes to cover the baby bump."

Alyson's character Lilly is pregnant on the show, so they won't have to strategically cover her belly with plants, signs or pots of stew.

Hannigan and Denisof have been married since 2003. The sequel to "American Pie" and "American Wedding," "American Reunion" is currently in post-production.

Douglas Carter Beane Revisits Ancient Classic for ‘Lysistrata Jones’

Michael Childers Douglas Carter Beane

Douglas Carter Beane wrote the book for a new musical, “Lysistrata Jones,” which opens on Broadway tonight. Beane, who also wrote “Xanadu” and “Sister Act,” took what he called a “comic riff” on the Aristophanes classic, “Lysistrata,” setting the story on a university campus and centering it on one girl, her cheerleader friends, and a basketball team.

Speakeasy caught up with Beane, who lives in Manhattan, to discuss the new show.

Goon [goon]

2.A stupid, foolish or awkward person

Meet Doug Glatt (Seann William Scott). He may not be the sharpest blade on the rink, but he’s got a killer right hook.

When his permanently wasted best friend Pat (Jay Baruchel) runs into trouble, Doug’s ability to beat the crap out of everyone and everything impresses a sports coach who signs him up to annihilate the opposition and a feisty female fan (Alison Pill) who digs dangerous sports

Seann William Scott Meets The Team In New Red Band Clip From Goon

12 December 2011 11:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

We’ll be seeing Seann William Scott hitting the big screen quite a few times next year, first off with the upcoming hockey comedy Goon, which is set to be a brilliant kick-start to the new year, coming to our cinemas the first weekend of 2012.

We got our first trailer for the film back in September, followed by another terrific trailer last month, and we’ve now got a fantastic (unofficially red band) new clip to share with you, courtesy of Empire. Nothing red band in terms of visuals, just a healthy dose of F-bombs and the like, so not suitable for work.

Movie Poster Round-Up: The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spider-Man, Men in Black 3

11 December 2011 9:14 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

We've got some new movie posters for you this weekend, including a pretty badass teaser poster for The Dark Knight Rises. If you ask me, it's lending more credibility to the rumours that Batman will actually die, although it could also just be playing up the fact that Bane is "The Man Who Broke the Bat." In addition, we've also got a new teaser poster for The Amazing Spider-Man, a strange one for Will Ferrell's Spanish-language comedy Casa de Mi Padre and that mysterious one-sheet for Joss Whedon's The Cabin in the Woods. The marketing team behind The Darkest Hour clearly took some notes from the District 9 viral campaign as they have released a handful of very familiar-looking alien warning signs, while the new American Reunion poster attempts to recreate the very first American Pie poster. However, I think my favourites are the Men in Black 3 teaser »

This week's new films

Another Earth (12A)

(Mike Cahill, 2011, Us) Brit Marling, William Mapother, Matthew-Lee Erlbach. 92 mins

It's been quite a year for cosmic arthouse, and like The Tree Of Life and Melancholia, this low-key indie contrasts inner and outer space to stirring effect. Unlike a Kubrick-style space odyssey, it's very much down to earth – Earth One, that is. "Earth Two", a duplicate of our own, is more like a giant metaphor in the sky. Its discovery tragically fuses the lives of two people, and could yet resolve it, which makes for a tender character drama with a shot of sci-fi ingenuity.

Puss In Boots (U)

(Chris Miller, 2011, Us) Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis. 90 mins

Between the Shrek brand recognition, the bright 3D, the broad-spectrum comedy and the prospect of cute cats dancing, it's hard to imagine a more mercilessly commercial proposition than this animated spin-off. It's a predictably polished affair, with Banderas's »
