I can’t remember why, I’ve slept since then, but, in January of 2000, I found myself sitting in front of a blank Word document. I had an idea in my head of what I wanted to do, and, now, 10 years later, I’m still working strong at it. I began keeping a sort of diary, listing the days and months and putting down the films I saw in the theater into it. I don’t remember why I only included movies I saw in the theater. I could have started just as an idea-giver on how many movies I actually saw each year (I also kept a running count each year). It began on January 7th, 2000, when I entered Bicentennial Man as my first film in this long and ever-growing endeavor.
In 2000, I saw 166 films in the theater. There were many a high (seeing Gladiator on May 5th and

10 closest Oscar races in the past 20 years

One of the shrewdest Oscarologists on the planet is Tariq Khan of Fox News, who often generously shares his views of current and past derbies with Gold Derby readers. Here he takes a nostalgic look at the past two decades, offering his take on the most competitive derbies. Words below are Tariq's. Thanks, m'friend!
We’ve often discussed those Oscar races that seem just too close to call . . . where it’s clear (or at least seems clear) that the eventual winner will nab the Oscar with only a few more votes than his or her nearest competitor.
While we can never really know for sure (unless we get one of those top jobs at the accounting firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers,) we do have some idea of what may have been the closest races in Oscar history. Allow me to present what I believe were the 10 closest acting races over the course of the past 20 years.

Disney’s A Christmas Carol Movie Review

One of the things you really have to ask yourself at the outset is, "Why do people keep remaking Charles Dickens' story?" The easy answer is that we need a decent helping of holiday fare at the theaters, but there are other things we could do, and even redo. It may still be a ways off, but we're quickly gaining on the 200th Anniversary of this story... surely there are other tales we could explore.
While spitting out a movie just to cash in is never a motive that should be overlooked, the people behind the thirty-odd versions of this particular story don't seem as a general rule to be those sorts of people. On the other hand, Robert Zemeckis is one of the first names that might pop into my mind when working out a list of those capable of churning out nonsense based largely on the idea

Don’t act like you’re surprised. You knew this announcement was coming from the moment we first heard that director Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future) was making a sequel to his 1988 smash hit, Who Framed Roger Rabbit? It was just a matter of time, really. With three Mocap (that’s the new slang for “motion-capture”, Fyi) films already under his belt – Polar Express, Beowulf, and A Christmas Carol – it was a natural leap of thought to assume Zemeckis would use his favorite new toy in a Roger Rabbit sequel.
However, it appears that the Toon characters (Roger, Jessica, Benny the Cab) will not be the ones making the leap into the 21st century. According to his interview with MTV, Zemeckis doesn’t plan on using Mocap for those characters, just the human ones (as if that makes it any better). Read what he had to say below:

Danny Boyle is working once again with Fox Searchlight and he's bringing back his "Slumdog Millionaire" creative team with him.
Their upcoming collaboration is called "127 Hours" about the real-life tale of mountaineer Aron Ralston. You may remember the name, he's the man who nearly died pinned under a boulder during a climb in Utah in May of 2003.
For five days, Ralston's right forearm was under that boulder, so he used a dull knife to amputate himself. Take a look at this video for more of Ralston's story, and then continue reading to find out who's being rumored to play him:
Boyle is set to direct the movie. Production begins early next year for a late 2010 release, just in time for the Oscar season.
The director has written a treatment, and Simon Beaufoy is negotiating to write the script. "127 Hours" will be Boyle's fifth time around with Fox Searchlight. The director

Here’s an interesting piece of news for you to ponder. While the rest of Hollywood TV and movie studios are out promoting their upcoming projects at Comic Con, Robert Zemeckis is there to clarify some things about his latest upcoming project, A Christmas Carol. Apparently Zemeckis wants us to know that his version of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is a “classic ghost story”.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times Thursday, and verified at the Disney 3D comic Con panel by our own writer Rob Keyes, Zemickis said he thought people might get the wrong idea about A Christmas Carol because it is being released by Disney.
“…,this is a movie for real movie fans, and real ghost-story fans and fans of graphic novels.”
I personally find this information puzzling. It doesn’t make that much sense to me that he is going all ghost-story with Dickens’ classic tale of family,

When Directors Invade Comic-Con

For the past decade, the San Diego Comic-Con has seen a major upturn in Hollywood presence. As high concept science-fiction and fantasy films continue to dominate the blockbuster charts, Sdcc has become the best venue to promote genre movies. Even movies and TV shows that have nothing to do with comic books or comic book-related genres (I'm looking at you, Judd Apatow comedies) spare their time to make a Con presence. This means plenty of appearances from famous entertainers—directors, writers and performers.
It's easy to whine about the decline of Sdcc's focus on geek stuff (a disenchanted friend pointed out to me that Comic-Con is a place where fans pay money to be advertised to by movie studios), but let's be honest, where else would you see these big filmmakers connect so enthusiastically with their fans? This year marks the 40th anniversary of Sdcc, and more than ever, they boast an impressive roster.

Video: Michael Jackson's Last Film Role

Michael Jackson had a 30 second cameo in "Men in Black II" and to expand on that, he appeared in a 2005 movie called "Miss Cast Away," starring Eric Roberts and the guy from "Joe Millionaire." In addition to Jackson, the movie is also the last time we see Bob Denver and Pat Morita. "Miss Cast Away" was released on DVD in 2005 and is directed by longtime Jackson friend Bryan Michael Stoller. It is a spoof that attempts to combine "Cast Away" with "Miss Congeniality," "Planet of the Apes," "Love Boat," "Gilligan's Island," "The Sixth Sense," "Jurassic Park," and more. The trailer for this ridiculous movie is below. And we also included a video of Stoller interviewing Jackson, while he is being interviewed by a giant Ape.

In 2004 a movie was made that was so awful, it was the death of three of the film's stars. Miss Cast Away, a movie that is somehow a spoof of Jurassic Park, Planet Of The Apes, Cast Away and Austin Powers all at once, marked the last screen performances of Bob Denver, Pat Morita and Michael Jackson. Yup, it's not often Michael Jackson made appearances in film but he filmed a role in Miss Cast Away as...well, I have no idea. But he appears to the characters in a cloud and gives them sage

Ryan Reynolds recently went on Australian television and spoke publicly for the first time about his ambitious upcoming film Buried while promoting The Proposal.
The indie film, from Spanish director Rodrigo Cortés and screenwriter Chris Sparling, is about an American contractor in Iraq whom awakens after being kidnapped buried in a coffin with only a cell phone, candle and knife. The entire 80-minute run time will be spent fixated on the coffin's interior.
The quotes come via The Playlist where Reynolds suggests he will be the only person in the entire movie. "Buried is the story about a guy whose buried (laughs). It's the only movie I've ever heard of with only one person in it," Reynolds said. "So it's just me, I'm the only person in the whole movie so, I don't know, we'll see. It's either going to be, you know, the greatest, most experimental cool movie ever made or god knows what.

CGI Jim Carrey in A Christmas Carol
One of the most loved Christmas stories ever written is arguably Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. A quick IMDb search produces 26 versions of the story told on film, theater or TV. A Christmas Carol has been in told in a variety of way by a variety of characters. Mickey Mouse, Kermit the Frog, Mister Magoo, The Flintstones and even Bill Murray have all taken a crack at it and most if not all have succeeded in faithfully reproducing the story.
Disney is trying to repeat the success they have had with the Charles Dickens classic and they have enlisted the help of Robert Zemeckis to write and direct their attempt. Jim Carrey will play multiple roles in A Christmas Carol as Ebenezer Scrooge and the Ghosts of Christmas Past/Present/Yet to Come. He co-stars along with Bob Hoskins, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth and Robin Penn Wright.
