Sex & Nudity

  • Before hardcore (bragging rap included) and gangsta rap, mostly just skimpy-dressed girls, and the dancing was sensual. After, usually none, but sometimes, rappers would recite the more explicit stuff, usually bleeped on TV. For the DVDs of "Soul Train," it's uncensored.

Violence & Gore

  • Before hardcore (bragging rap included) and gangsta rap, none. After, the more violent lyrics starting kicking it. Usually it's one from the edited versions of the songs, and so they had different lyrics. Sometimes it would be its graphic original form. Explicit on the episodes for the DVD version.

Profanity

  • Before hardcore (bragging rap included) and gangsta rap, none. From that on, usually none, except for some exceptions, in which the rappers would do the unedited, uncensored forms, usually bleeped on TV. Explicit on the DVDs.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Before hardcore (bragging rap included) and gangsta rap, just nightclub drinking (maybe some smoking). From then on, usually the drug references are edited out, but sometimes the drug references were made (bleeped on TV). Unedited/uncensored for the DVDs.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Before hardcore (bragging rap included) and gangsta rap, none. But from then on, the subject matter could range. Usually not super intense. "Soul Train" doesn't allow intense/creepy stuff. It's a light-hearted, though, in later years, adult-oriented show.
