Fry & Laurie's Sherlock, Gavin & Stacey Us: 5 shows axed before they aired

4 July 2014 5:21 AM, PDT | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - TV news news »

Hieroglyph - we hardly knew ye.

Greenlit by Us network Fox, the action-adventure series starring Spooks and Beauty & The Beast veteran Max Brown was axed earlier this week before it had aired a single episode.

The broadcaster cited "creative reasons" for the pre-premiere cancellation, though perhaps Fox was cleaning house following the surprise exit of entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly?

Brown and his co-stars can at least take some solace in the fact that they're far from the first cast and crew to have a show commissioned and then canned in quick succession...

Gregory House kills Sherlock Holmes

In early 2004, it was announced that Conan Doyle aficionado Stephen Fry was to play Sherlock Holmes in a TV drama for ITV, with his old sparring partner Hugh Laurie cast as Watson.

Ironically, it was the unexpected success of House - in which Laurie played the Holmes-inspired title character - that scuppered the project. »

Paris– Jalil Lespert, whose latest movie “Yves Saint Laurent” was just released in the U.S. by The Weinstein Company, is set to direct “Versailles,” an English-language historical drama skein penned by Simon Mirren (“Without a Trace”) and David Wolstencroft (“Spooks”).

Louis Xiv didn’t just reinvent what it meant to be a King. In building Versailles he created the world’s first global brand. This is a contemporary story of power, betrayal, and family that just so happens to be set in the 17th century,” said Mirren and Wolstencroft.

Films include Eli Roth’s Knock Knock, Anton Corbijn’s Life, Boychoir starring Dustin Hoffman and Spooks feature.

German distributor SquareOne Entertainment has acquired all German-speaking rights to four upcoming films, which all generated major buzz at the Cannes Marché in May.

Knock Knock was acquired from Voltage Pictures. Eli Roth is currently filming the feature in Chile with stars Keanu Reeves, Ana de Armas and Lorenza Izzo, of which the latter starred in Roth’s upcoming horror The Green Inferno.

Fox cancels Hieroglyph – before it even airs

1 July 2014 12:27 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Ouch. It looks like “action-adventure” series Hieroglyph has had its plugged pulled before its even had a chance to switch on with The Hollywood Reporter bringing the news that the show has been cancelled after filming just one episode.

According to the website, problems started to show after the first episode was completed with writers “breaking scripts and stories” which then weren’t meeting the creative level for the rest of the season. 12 more episodes were planned to film later this year with a launch date of early 2015, but it looks like this one is all wrapped up.

Hieroglyph was being written by Pacific Rim‘s Travis Beacham.

When Doctor Who returns in less than two months there won’t just be a new Doctor regeneration (brought to life by Peter Capaldi of The Thick of It and In the Loop fame), but also new supporting characters and/or other-worldly enemies to boot – along with some familiar faces, both friendly and… well, not so friendly to The Doctor’s cause. In the former category, we have Clara (Jenna Coleman) and Danny – one of Clara’s fellow teachers, played by Samuel Anderson (Emmerdale).

The list of people set to make guest star appearance on the resurrected Doctor Who‘s eight series includes Keeley Hawes (Line of Duty), Ben Miller (Death in Paradise), Hermione Norris (Mi-5), Tom Riley (Da Vinci’s Demons), ...

Idris Elba Invades Tiraji P. Henson's Home in 'No Good Deed' Trailer

13 June 2014 8:12 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Last year we saw Idris Elba take on some fantastical bad guys in Pacific Rim and Thor: The Dark World, and he even changed history as Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. But this year he's becoming a villain himself. However, he's not becoming a monster or a comic book villain, but rather a menacing man who weasels his way into a family's house after pretending to have some car trouble in No Good Deed. This looks like a typical home invasion thriller from this first trailer, but both Elba and Taraji P. Henson ("Person of Interest") seem to elevate this typical sort of story with their performances. Plus this film comes from Elba's "Luther" television series director Sam Miller, so that's cool. Watch the trailer! Here's the first trailer for Sam Miller's No Good Deed straight from Sony Pictures: No Good Deed is directed by Sam Miller »

Doctor Who: the film careers of Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi

4 June 2014 11:59 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Alex's series looking back at the film careers of actors who've played the Doctor finishes with Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi...

Feature

Read the previous part in this series: the film careers of Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, here.

By 2009, the new version of Doctor Who had become not only an integral part of Saturday night television and a huge Christmas ratings winner but also an international success all over again. David Tennant, who had played the Time Lord since 2005 and was, arguably, more popular than any Doctor since the mighty Tom Baker hung up his scarf in 1981, had announced his resignation from the part he loved in October 2008. Many wondered how the incoming showrunner, Steven Moffat, would follow Tennant and what kind of show would emerge.

Tennant spent much of 2009 on stage in Hamlet and was only able to devote small amounts of time to Doctor Who. Occasional specials »

‘Spooks: The Greater Good’ Releases Kit Harington Image

23 May 2014 1:30 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

I had no idea about this one, but maybe in the covert world of international intrigue that’s an appropriate response. Recently-decommissioned BBC drama Spooks is getting made into a film, featuring Game Of Thrones star Kit Harington, here seen in full-on action mode. The programme was one of the corporation’s biggest hits, running across 10 series and hiring and jettisoning an array of photogenic spies, including Keeley Hawes (Ashes To Ashes), Rupert Penry-Jones (Whitechapel), Hermione Norris (The Crimson Field) and Richard Armitage (The Hobbit).

It’s one thing to have a successful TV product and quite another to pull off a cinematic transfer. While it doesn’t strike me as a great idea to bank on a long-running show having the momentum to hit the big screen just after it’s gone off air, the cast is promising. New look at Kit Harington in the Spooks movie

See Game Of Thrones' Kit Harington run across a London rooftop in this early image from the Spooks movie...

News

Fans of Kit Harington running were well served by the recently released Pompeii, and it looks as though more bouncing-haired action is coming their way in the currently filming Spooks movie, Spooks: The Greater Good.

Here's an early set photo showing the Game Of Thrones actor negotiating his way along a London rooftop, gun-in-hand, channelling the Bauers and Bournes of the thriller genre. We hardly recognised Jon Snow in civvies, without frost in his beard and an enormous wolf by his side.

Harrington plays Will Crombie in the film, due out later this year, with Spooks long-timer Peter Firth back in the role of Harry Pearce, joined by Jennifer Ehle, Tuppence Middleton and more. The official (somewhat spoiler-y, we estimate) synopsis is as follows:

Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman were pictured inside bright orange space suits as they filmed the latest scenes for Doctor Who yesterday (May 21).

Capaldi, who was recently described as having "madness in his eyes" by writer Mark Gatiss, was seen standing next to a Tardis with Coleman, who stars as his companion, on Aberavon beach in Port Talbot, Wales.

The pair were later seen sporting sunglasses on the sunny beach, and laughing and joking in between takes.

Actress Hermione Norris was also spotted in the sand dunes wearing a silver space suit. The BBC recently confirmed that the former Spooks star will feature in series eight of Doctor Who in an episode that is set in Lanzarote and written by Wallander's Peter Harness.

Norris said of appearing in the cult series: "It's exciting to be part of such an iconic show, and one that my kids can watch!"

Fresh details of a Doctor Who series 8 episode - which might just be harking back to a 1984 Peter Davison story...

The BBC has announced a new guest star for Doctor Who series 8, as Spooks, Cold Feet and The Crimson Field star Hermione Norris is set to appear in the show.

Norris will be appearing in the episode that's been written by Peter Harness. Steven Moffat has dropped some clues as the story as well. He said that "it's a testament to the quality of Peter Harness's intense and emotional script, that we've been able to attract an actress of the brilliance of Hermione Norris. And for the first time since 1984, the Doctor Who production team is heading to Lanzarote. The Doctor is returning to the scene of an old adventure - but there have been sinister changes since his last visit.".
