Tilda Swinton In Hip Remake Of 'Auntie Mame' Gets Us Thinking: Five Other Musicals That Should Be Updated

8 September 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

While promoting their new film "I Am Love" at the Venice Film Festival, actress-producer Tilda Swinton and director Luca Guadagnino announced plans to collaborate again on a remake of "Auntie Mame," previously reworked as the musical "Mame," Variety reports. The duo has no legitimate rights to the original novel by Patrick Dennis nor either film version; they're merely using this opportunity to send out an "Sos" to Warner Bros. of their intentions to remake the film with Swinton as the titular eccentric who takes in her orphaned nephew.

While it's unclear if their plan is to make another musical version of the story, Guadagnino does say it will be a "rock-n-roll, super funny, super mainstream movie," implying at least a soundtrack-heavy project. Fans of the original film would certainly be more okay with something supplanting the remake, with its forgettable vocal performance by Lucille Ball -- though Bea Arthur devotees may protest. »

The 1999 film 10 Things I Hate About You was one of a popular spate of teen films that hit theaters right before the new millennium and now, 10 years later, the film is getting new life on the small screen. ABC Family will be premiering the TV version of 10 Things I Hate About You on Tuesday, July 7 at 8 Pm Et and I was recently given the opportunity to visit the set and chat with the cast of this new series. Before the other reporters and I headed out to Santa Clarita Studios, we met at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood to have breakfast with one of the cast members who wasn't filming that day, Ethan Peck, who plays the mysterious Patrick Verona, a character which the late Heath Ledger portrayed in what turned out to be his breakthrough role. Here's what Peck had to say during our chat.

We're all for getting out in the summertime, but there might not be anything more refreshing than cooling off in a movie theater... or seeing a movie in the comfort of your air-conditioned home on demand, on DVD, or online... or better yet catching a classic on the big screen at a nearby repertory theater. Chock Full Of Spock

4 May 2009 6:47 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

The arrival of "Star Trek" signals the start of blockbuster season (in our orbit, "Wolverine" doesn't count), and the indie world wastes no time with responding in kind with a few big name players of its own.

Atom Egoyan landed himself a Palme d'Or nomination at last year's Cannes for the latest of his patented multi-stranded narratives of introspection, this one a meditation on the marginalization of truth and the role of technology in the post-9/11 mindset. Overlooked Greatness: 'Brick' (2005)

5 March 2009 1:14 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Photo: Focus Features This just in (not really, but it makes it sound important): Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience has underperformed. Expected to make in the area of $30 million, the 3D picture that thought it could has come in at just under $13 million. Now, since it has been heralded as a "concert experience," I'm not sure if it really qualifies as a movie... but hearing about this sad, un-Miley-like box office implosion, I started wondering: What happened to movies with teen themes? Can't Hardly Wait... She's All That... Boys and Girls. The American Pie franchise has been relegated to DVD reprisal, and last I heard, 10 Things I Hate About You is now in development to become a TV series... which seems weird. Well, here's what I think happened to movies primarily featuring teen storylines: they sucked. Oh, that might seem like a harsh conclusion -- I watched and loved them all, »
