'Kill' fills boxoffice bill

13 October 2003 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Miramax's Kill Bill-Vol. 1 clearly had the edge on the competition during a record Columbus Day Holiday weekend as the martial arts actioner, helmed and written by Quentin Tarantino, served up an estimated $22.7 million to debut in the top spot. If estimates hold, the opening for the R-rated Kill Bill will be the fourth biggest in October. The Uma Thurman starrer proved a company best for the Miramax label, topping She's All That which bowed with $16 million in 1999, and was a personal best for Tarantino, besting the $12.9 million taken in by Jackie Brown. But Jackie, Tarantino's last theatrical outing, was released nearly six years ago and was in less than half as many theaters as Kill Bill. The strong performance of Kill Bill at the boxoffice demonstrated that audiences didn't mind that the film was cut into two separate pictures. The film was originally envisioned as one movie, but it ended up being more than three hours long and was made into Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, the latter of which will be released in February. »
