93 movie remakes and reboots currently in the works

19 August 2015 2:05 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

From The Craft and The Birds to The Fugitive and She's All That, the many film reboots and remakes currently in the works...

Over the years that Den Of Geek has been going, we've regularly been charting the assortment of reboots and remakes that are making their way through the Hollywood system. This, then, is the current state of play. We've removed a bunch of projects that seem utterly dead - the once mooted remakes of Videodrome and Timecrimes, for instance - but we'll keep this list up to date as and when we hear of more.

Without further ado, here's what's coming up...

Akira

One of Hollywood's most on and off projects, the current state of the live action Akira remake is that it's back in the works. Marco J Ramirez, the showrunner for season 2 of Netflix's Daredevil show, has been hired to pen a screenplay. Warner Bros is still backing the film, »

What's Leaving Netflix in July 2015

22 June 2015 5:30 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

Want to revisit "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" before "Terminator: Genisys" opens? Better do it before July 1, when Netflix says "Hasta la vista" to the 1991 sequel.

If you have a hankering to watch "Four Weddings and a Funeral," "Moonstruck," "Cast Away," or "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," get on it, because those are also disappearing in July.

And start marathoning these TV classics before they go poof: "Leave it to Beaver," "Dragnet," "Mission: Impossible," "Hawaii Five-o," "Magnum P.I.," "Miami Vice," "Knight Rider," "Melrose Place" and "Wings." Also bid goodbye to the Stephen King miniseries "The Stand" (1994) and "The Langoliers" (1995).

Below is a complete list of the movies that Netflix is pulling from your streaming list. And, just so you're not left empty-handed, here's a list of what's new on Netflix in July 2015. (All titles and dates provided by Netflix and subject to change.)

‘Kindergarten Cop’ Remake in the Works at Universal

Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s beloved 1990 comedy “Kindergarten Cop” is getting the remake treatment from Universal’s 1440 Entertainment division, which has set its sights on a home video release, an individual familiar with the project has told TheWrap. Unlike the “Terminator” series, Schwarzenegger will not be back this time, having graduated from the franchise long ago. Ivan Reitman directed the original movie, which starred Schwarzenegger as a cop who’s forced to go undercover as a kindergarten teacher in order to catch a drug dealer whose son attends the school. Hadley Freeman interview: 80s movies, Eddie Murphy, Lucas

3 June 2015 3:50 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Heathers, John Hughes, Back To The Future, Nora Ephron, Coming To America and more, as we chat 80s movies with Hadley Freeman...

Hadley Freeman's latest book has harnessed her love of 80s movies, and gone into detail about just why they work so well. Entitled Life Moves Pretty Fast, you won't be surprised to hear that Ferris Bueller's Day Off features in there. But then so does Dirty Dancing, Top Gun, Ghostbusters, Back To The Future and Eddie Murphy.

So what makes 80s movies so special? That seemed a logical place to start, as we caught up with Hadley for a chat...

Can I start by throwing a paraphrased movie quote at you? That line in The Truman Show about accepting the reality with which we're presented? At what point did you come to accept and realise that the movies of the 80s were so special to you? As you grew up with them, »

Crazy, operatic 'Gotham' finale spurs optimism for Season 2

4 May 2015 6:41 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

What if "Gotham" was not the TV series that so many of us thought we needed back in the fall, but what if Bruno Heller's twisty comic book drama has become the TV series we deserve now? Look, if you're going to get hung up on Batman mythology, I'm powerless to tell you that "Gotham" became or ever will become a show that will make you happy.  It's a prequel that almost cannot possibly ever line up with the version of the Caped Crusader that we know from either DC Comics, from the Christopher Nolan films or the early Tim Burton films. And that's frustrating. I can't tell you that it isn't.  The Penguin is rising! The Riddler is cracking! Somebody who may or may not be The Joker is becoming dangerously unhinged! Even Harvey Dent looks to be a couple bum coin flips away from dementia.  And Bruce »

Weird Crush Wednesday: Vanessa Bayer's repressed 'SNL' housewives

15 April 2015 1:17 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Our weekly column in which writers share their off-beat, wacky and unexpected current obsessions. The ladies on "SNL" are killing it this season, particularly the unstoppable trio of Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant and Vanessa Bayer. Speaking of Bayer, I am currently obsessed with one particular facet of the underrated cast member's formidable skill set: her obvious knack for portraying repressed suburban housewives. We first became aware of her genius in this regard during the hilarious Totino's Activity Pack Super Bowl ad this year, which for once took us behind the scenes of every male-driven beer and pizza roll ad in existence to show us what really goes down on the other side of that sunny kitchen threshold: a slow descent into madness. Bayer's vapid Stepford Wife sunniness, delivered with a plastered-on smile that shows signs of breaking into a wail at any moment, perfectly encapsulates the outdated "doting housewife" persona »

Deadpool: After repeated rumors, Ed Skrein (above in 2012's Ill Manors) has now confirmed that he is playing the villain in the upcoming Deadpool. Similar to how Morena Baccharin revealed her role in the movie, Skrein shared a photo of his on-set chair with his character's name (Ajax) on it. In the comics, Ajax tries to kill the hero (Ryan Reynolds) before going on the run himself, eventually seeking revenge. We'll have to wait until the movie opens in theaters on February 12, 2016, to see how it all plays out. 29 Perfect Moments From She's All That That Can Never Be Replicated

8 April 2015 11:46 AM, PDT | POPSUGAR | See recent BuzzSugar news »

A rumor that She's All That is being remade emerged on Wednesday, and whether you might be excited about the news or convinced it's a travesty, the fact remains that the original is pure gold. Freddie Prinze Jr. stars as the most popular kid in school who makes a bet with his friend (a young Paul Walker) that he can make the school dork (Rachael Leigh Cook) a prom queen. It's a simple and cruel premise, but the movie is a feel-good romance with plenty of memorable moments. It easily stands out as one of the best teen movies of 1999, and these GIFs are proof that no remake can capture the magic of the original. »

Freddie Prinze Jr. Weighs In On "She's All That" Reboot

8 April 2015 11:30 AM, PDT | TooFab | See recent TooFab news »

One of our favorite '90s teen flicks may be getting a major makeover!   The Wrap reported on Tuesday that the beloved 1999 romantic comedy, "She's All That" is getting a remake -- one that will allegedly be directed by Spike Lee's wife, Tonya Lewis Lee.  The original flick follows the story of a high school jock, Zack Siler, who bets his friends that he can make any girl in the school prom queen material. Zack's friends choose the school's artsy outcast, Laney Boggs, for the wager ... but, Siler ends up actually falling for her in the process.  The original "She's All That" film boasted a pretty impressive cast, too -- Freddie Prinze Jr., Rachael Leigh Cook, Matthew Lillard, Usher, Anna Paquin, Lil' Kim and the late Paul Walker all appeared in the teen dramedy.  The Weinstein Company and Miramax are reportedly developing the reboot, but have yet to comment on The Wrap's report. »
