“I’m old, not obsolete” – Where did the 80’s Action Heroes go?

  • HeyUGuys
Author: Matt Rodgers

Growing up in the UK’s equivalent of The Shire meant that access to the escapism of video rentals was something as distant as The Misty Mountains. The arrival of a man who looked like Stanley Uris from Stephen King’s It, driving a van that was filled to the rafters with VHS, and which glowed like the Pulp Fiction briefcase when opened, introduced me to a roll-call of the 80s Action Heroes. Monosyllabic men, who quipped their way through bullets and bodies. The first plastic case to cross my sweaty palms featured a muscular fellow, holding a gun, against a colourful heatmap backdrop. It was Predator, and that was a long time ago.

About where things began to change for the real expendables is hard to pinpoint. Why did these one-time box-office giants; Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Van-Damme, and to a lesser degree Lundgren, suddenly find their powers diminishing?

Arnold Schwarzenegger, A Career In Crisis: Why the ’80s Action Icon Can’t Mount a Comeback

Arnold Schwarzenegger, A Career In Crisis: Why the ’80s Action Icon Can’t Mount a Comeback
This can’t be what Arnold Schwarzenegger imagined 2017 to look like: Sure, there’s a reality star in the White House, the Chicago Cubs are World Series champions, and his arch-rival (/best celebrity friend), Sylvester Stallone, is a recent Academy Award nominee. Yet for the ex-governor of California, far more confounding is how he became an ex-celebrity.

Schwarzenegger spent his acting life amassing a domestic box office of more than $1.8 billion. That haul came from comedies, like “Twins” ($111 million); science fiction, like “Total Recall” ($119 million) and “Terminator 2” ($204 million); or — his bread and butter — action flicks a la “True Lies” ($146 million) and “Eraser” ($101 million). But one unfortunate connection for all of Schwarzenegger’s films grossing $100 million-plus: They were all made before the year 2000.

Since the dawn of the new millennium, Schwarzenegger’s name above the title has carried less weight at the box office, resulting in drastically lower figures. How he

New Doctor Strange Set Pics Show Closer Look At Benedict Cumberbatch's Sorcerer Supreme

Principal photography on Marvel's Doctor Strange picked up this morning in Kathmandu, Nepal, following yesterday's unconventional commencement. And several new photos have surfaced from the shoot (via Twitter and Instagram) with a much closer look at a scruffy Benedict Cumberbatch in full costume as Stephen Strange. Furthermore, the Oscar-nominated actor's dialect coach, Sarah Shepherd, has been posting photos on social media from the same filming location which could imply that Cumberbatch's Sorcerer Supreme will have an American accent as opposed to British. There is no word on how long Doctor Strange will be filming in Nepal, but the Marvel Studios production (aliased Eye See You) is expected to head to London next month. In the meantime, be on the lookout for more photos hopefully with other cast members in costume. What do you think? Directed by Scott Derrickson, Doctor Strange stars Benedict Cumberbatch (Dr. Stephen Strange), Rachael McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor

Theatre Review: An Evening With Sylvester Stallone

Image: Jonathan Brady/Pa

Featuring: Sylvester Stallone, Jonathan Ross.

Produced by: Rocco Buonvino, Joe Ricotta.

It’s quite a thing sitting in the same room as one of your idols. All sorts of questions go through your mind. What will they be like? Will they live up to your expectation? Will they epitomise the legend you imagined and would like them to be? Will they somehow acknowledge my existence in the world.

After years of seeing them on the screen worshiping the cinematic ground that they walk upon, one worries to think that they may turn out to be the complete opposite; a prize douche, headstrong and egotistic, and nowhere near the god you thought they were. This is dangerous, life-ruining stuff, and not to be taken lightly.

On Saturday evening, I and around 2000 fellow film fans braved the aforementioned trepidations, faced our fear and stepped into one of the West End,

First Photos: Schwarzenegger In "Sabotage"

  • Dark Horizons
Sylvester Stallone did it with "D-Tox," John Cusack with "Identity," Val Kilmer with "Mindhunters", and now Agatha Christie's well-worn "And Then There Were None" formula is getting trotted out again.

This time it's Arnold Schwarzenegger leading the group of ten, an elite DEA task force who successfully execute a raid on a cartel safe house. It seems to be all over, until one by one the team members start dying.

USA Today has posted the first photos from the David Ayer-directed action thriller which also stars Sam Worthington, Joe Manganiello, Terrence Howard, Josh Holloway, Olivia Williams, Mireille Enos and Max Martini. The film opens April 11th.

I Know What You Did Last Summer Director is Back With Take Down

Jim Gillespie is returning to the thriller scene for his first project since 2005's Venom.  According to Variety, he'll next helm Take Down, a film "about a group of rich youngsters trying to defeat criminals who are to abduct them from far-flung boarding school."  The director made his feature debut in the '90s with I Know What You Did Last Summer.  He followed that up with D-Tox, starring Sylvestor Stallone.

Sylvester Stallone Steps Back from Action for 'Reach Me' Indie Drama

Sylvester Stallone has had a pretty impressive comeback in recent years. The Rocky and Rambo star was once one of the biggest actors in the world, but despite his box office successes through the 80s and 90s, he was relegated to straight-to-dvd work like Eye See You, Shade, and Avenging Angelo for much of the 2000s. After resurrecting his iconic characters and getting the gang back together for The Expendables, Stallone seems to have a second chance at being a megastar again, but that doesn't mean he'll only be doing blockbusters. Variety reports that Sly has joined Reach Me, an indie drama for director John Herzfeld. The film tells the story of a collection of people who have a connection with a self-help book written by a secretive and reclusive former football coach and stars rapper-turned-actor Nelly, Elizabeth Henstridge (who has just been cast in Joss Whedon's "S.H.I.E.L.D." Retro Shock Theater: Silent Rage

With the ‘80s action hero ensemble The Expendables 2 currently on theater screens worldwide, it’s worth remembering that most of these men of action have dabbled in horror over the years. Bruce Willis has the ghostly hit The Sixth Sense (1999) to his credit; Arnold Schwarzennegger went toe to toe with a tenacious space-spawned hunter in the classic sci-fi/horror hybrid Predator (1987) and took on Satan in End of Days (1999); Sylvester Stallone battled a serial killer in the little-seen Eye See You (1999) and some would say that his violent cop thriller Cobra (1986) rests comfortably on the periphery of the ‘80s slasher genre. But despite the various merits of those films, I have to single out the Chuck Norris vehicle Silent Rage (1982) as a true action/horror favorite.

After 'The Expendables': What Should Sylvester Stallone Do Now?

He is one of the most recognized "movie stars" of the past 30 years.  He has been nominated for an Academy Award both as an actor and as a screenwriter and approaching the age of 65 he could beat the living crap out of most men without so much as breaking a sweat.

He is Sylvester Stallone and once again he sits atop the box office mountain with his newest film "The Expendables", the high octane adventure that is essentially a love letter to fans of the great action films of the 80's.

But amidst the success of "The Expendables" a lingering question hangs in the air... what does (or can) Sylvester Stallone do next?

Let's rewind a little bit.  20 years ago Stallone was one of the most bankable and successful stars in Hollywood.  He was so good that even though he had a couple of duds that would have killed other actors careers (yes,

Avatar Aiming For a Lame Best Song Oscar

Yes, it’s lame, and I apologize to you die-hard “My Heart Will Go On” fans out there. It was released today by Atlantic Records that James Horner’s score for Avatar would be hitting CD shelves on December 15th. With this announcement came word that not only would the soundtrack be filled with Horner’s score, but it will also be including an original song, “I See You,” performed by Leona Lewis.

For those of you who don’t know who that is (I had to look it up myself), she is a multi-platinum and three-time Grammy nominated R&B singer songwriter. The song, which, honestly, should have been written about seven years ago for that little-seen Stallone vehicle, Eye See You, is also being co-produced by Horner and Simon Franglen, both of whom did producing work on Titanic’s Academy Award winning song. A companion music video is

Actor to Guest Star Alongside Wife For Final Season of 'ER'

  • BuddyTV
While fans may be disappointed to hear that the upcoming season of ER will be the show’s last, some may find interest in the fact that it will be quite a star-studded 15th season. In fact, NBC announced today that yet another actor is set to join the cast as a guest star, who will take part in a multi-episode arc. In April, the network announced that Angela Bassett will be playing Dr. Cate Banfield in the upcoming season as a replacement for Kari Matchett’s outgoing character, Dr. Skye Wexler. Today, NBC announced that Bassett’s real life husband, Courtney B. Vance will be playing her on-screen hubby, Russell Banfield.

"We are excited to see the on-screen chemistry and emotion this incredibly talented husband and wife team will bring to our show," executive producer David Zabel said in a statement. "Fans are in for a treat and we
