Storyline

On the heels of the syndicated success of "Wheel of Fortune (1983)", producer Merv Griffin decided to return his classic quiz show-with-a-twist, "Jeopardy!" to the airwaves in 1984. It, too, was a huge success, and also marked a return to the game's tried-and-true formula of answers and questions (after a slightly-modified remake six years earlier failed to catch on). Three contestants, including a returning champion, competed. Six categories are announced (e.g., Art World, Cooking, 20th Century Republicans, "Friends (1994)", Muscle Men and College Girls Wearing White T-shirts), each having five answers ostensibly graded by difficulty, from $100 to $500. The champion chose a category and dollar amount (e.g., "College Girls Wearing White T-shirts for $100"), to which host Trebek reads the answer ("Inspector 12 must give her seal of approval before a college girl can wear one of these plain white T-shirts"). Contestants had to respond in question form ("What is Hanes?") ; if correct, ... Written by Brian Rathjen <briguy_52732@yahoo.com>

Trivia

Initially, contestants who won five matches retired as an "undefeated champion" and returned for a $100,000 tournament of champions. Starting around 1997, five day champions also won a new car that they selected from about five. Starting in 2003-2004, the five day limit was lifted, and contestants could keep on being a champion as long as they kept winning. See more »

The best game-show ever!
20 April 2005 | by See all my reviews

OK, so first of all, you have the answer, right? right. but what is the question?

Merv griffin had this idea a long time ago. so that's when he decided to create "what's the question?" but of course, it's not a flashy name. then, one fateful day, he was talking to some friends when the word "jeopardy" came up. Jeopardy. that's a word you don't hear everyday. so, the name jeopardy was the new game-show name. it was pretty awesome. Alex trebek, famous for "reach for the top", and "the wizard of odds", got hired to be the host of the show. and he's doing a pretty good job of it. some of the most interesting people have been on jeopardy. there was one guy in 1999, who was a one-day champ, named Ben Weiner. but oh man. no history in the history of history can remember that fateful day in June, 2004. the software engineer, from salt lake city, ken Jennings, went 79 days before being beaten. but he won 2.5 million dollars. personally, i like this show because the colors are flashy. that's why i began watching it when i was 3, but i always ran from the room when a daily double came off the board. for those of you who like game-shows, this is the best one ever.
