Rob Lowe's association with Joe Mantegna puts him on the spot
13 February 2015 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"For Hire" is a neo-noir thriller that looks like and plays like a lower-budget TV-movie. It has a good performance from Joe Mantegna. It has an interesting plot in which Mantegna, a successful writer, has designs on Lowe and traps him in a scheme. It has a little too much of Lowe's home life with his wife, Bronwen Booth. What tends to bring it down is its overall lackluster quality. It lacks spark. This permeates the movie and arises from the direction, the script, the laid-back acting of Lowe and the film editing. Joe Mantegna provides the most interest, and his acting is usually one of restrained tension. Transitions of scenes often are made with fade-outs and fade-ins that make it seem like a TV-movie. Secondary supporting characters don't carve out a presence on screen. The movie does pick up in its second half when the initial setup flowered into Lowe's trying to get out of his predicament. He needed to put something more into his performance to make it stand out more, and the director needed to put more into the story-telling. These would have hit our emotions more. As it stands, we feel the movie as being tentative and on the unoriginal side. And it shouldn't be because the basic story is interesting. It's the execution here that lets us down.
