Top 10 Hollywood Actors Still In Business

16 December 2011 7:05 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Much of our lurid film community is of the belief that America’s acting prowess died with its classic stars like Marlon Brando, James Stewart, Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, and Grace Kelly. However, I’m here to argue that America’s actors are stronger than ever and can match up toe to toe with the likes of both Europe and Asia.

The list will be split into two parts: in part one, I delve into the modern world of Hollywood actors with actresses soon to follow in part two.

Part one: Top Ten Actors Working In Hollywood Today

Actor With The Most Potential To Hit It Big: Paddy Considine

Before I begin the list, I want to take a moment to discuss an actor whom I believe has enormous potential. While not American born, British actor Paddy Considine has been in his fair share of American films like In America, »

Runaway reels: what happened to California's dream film location?

15 December 2011 3:12 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Los Angeles is no longer the hotspot for filming an action blockbuster, with film-makers relocating to places such as Vancouver. So what can it do to win back the émigrés?

One thing that reinforced the feeling Hollywood was the centre of the universe was the fact that it used to appear on screen so much. Or at least Los Angeles did. I was reminded of this last week when one of the characters in the sci-fi film In Time tumbled from the Sixth Street bridge and into the shallow slop of the La river. The arches of the bridge, the epic concrete flood-channel, the endless sight lines, the bleary light: all of it was familiar. Point Break, Terminator 2, Chinatown, Them! all sprang to mind. Andrew Niccol's thriller was saying the same thing about its casually iconic backdrops as its unageing parade of cheekboned 25-year-olds were saying about their lives: we shouldn't die. »

David Thomson on Ray Winstone

17 November 2011 4:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

It's a lack of pretension that makes Ray Winstone so likable – so long as we don't start getting fancy notions of him as 'an actor'

I suspect Ray Winstone usually knows a good film from a bad one, but he has a world-weary calm that sees no need to let us in on the secret. Perhaps he has an inkling of how pleased we are to see him, and since he has had to declare bankruptcy twice so far as a professional actor he may take a certain gloomy pleasure in just being employed. There are actors well versed in elaborate, erudite answers to the question, "Why did you take this part?", but Winstone has the battered patience of a bloke who has seldom believed in "taking" a part rather than having the good/bad luck of ending up with it. It is that lack of pretension that leaves him so natural and likable, »

Will Michael Fassbender's full frontal turn off Oscar voters?

8 November 2011 11:22 PM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

Michael Fassbender bares it all in "Shame" and revealing that much of himself could keep him from winning the Oscar for Best Actor. Plenty of male actors have been nominated for going nude in films. Among the best known are Colin Firth ("A Single Man," 2009), Leonardo DiCaprio ("The Aviator," 2004), and Jude Law ("Cold Mountain," 2003). These actors, however, strutted their stuff from the rear. Going full frontal -- as Fassbender does repeatedly -- is something Academy voters are averse to. There are very few notable exceptions of men getting Oscar nods for showing the full monty. Most recently, Viggo Mortensen revealed all in "Eastern Promises" (2007). Geoffrey Rush ("Quills," 2000) and Edward Norton ("American History X," 1998), Robin Williams ("The Fisher King," 1991), and Albert Finney ("Under the Volcano," 1984) are the only others -- unless you co »

Contraband International Trailer: Mark Wahlberg Gets Tough for a Change

8 November 2011 2:00 PM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

Remember Oscar season 2010-11? Remember we had to keep caring about The Fighter? I can't believe how long we had to care about The Fighter. For me it was the Cold Mountain of 2011. The louder you squawked, the better your Oscar chances. Did you wave your hands frantically a lot of the time? Did you steal your accent from an SNL table read? See you at the dais. Anyway, I'm still sore with Mark Wahlberg, and I'm approaching the international trailer for his new movie Contraband with that rancor. It comes out in January, so it has to be laughable. Let's laugh. »

Books: Book Review: Charles Frazier: Nightwoods

2 November 2011 10:01 AM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

The third novel by cataloguer of Appalachian woe Charles Frazier, Nightwoods is slower-moving than it has any right to be, considering that it includes a Cormac McCarthy-esque single-minded killer; a pair of mute, horror-flick children; and more of the brutal, homespun prose that made Cold Mountain a quick read in spite of the page count. After that book’s surprising success, the even-more-surprising $8 million advance for Thirteen Moons, and Frazier’s maybe-less-surprising failure to meet those enormous expectations, Nightwoods takes a step back to what worked in Cold Mountain, combining Inman’s blood-soaked wanderings with Ada’s domestic drive »

Max Minghella: 'At first it was difficult to be taken seriously'

22 October 2011 4:08 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Max Minghella initially found being the son of Oscar-winner Anthony Minghella a hindrance to his acting career, but he is now proving to be a star in his own right

Max Minghella insists he never really wanted to be an actor. Growing up, he thought it was a faintly ridiculous thing to do. "I wanted to write in film or something like that," he says now. "I thought acting was an embarrassing thing to say you wanted to do, especially when you're young. It seemed really uncool."

Even as a teenager, Minghella had more experience than most about what such a profession might entail. As the son of the late, Academy Award-winning director Anthony Minghella, he spent much of his youth traipsing around film sets.

When he finally did decide to become an actor, after seeing This Is Our Youth at the National and "falling in love" with the play, »
