27 July 2016 6:00 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

32 years ago today, the acting debut of a music icon we lost this year opened in theaters. Audiences were first treated to Purple Rain on July 27, 1984. Purple Rain proved that Prince could be just as captivating in a feature-length film as he was onstage and in music videos. The rock musical debuted a month after the album of the same name hit record stores, giving us such hits as “When Doves Cry,” “Let’s Go Crazy,” and “I Would Die 4 U.” Other notable July 27 happenings in pop culture history; • 1940: Bugs Bunny made his official debut at a screening of the short film A Wild Hare. • 1979: The Amityville Horror opened in theaters. • 1982: Little Shop of Horrors had its Off-Broadway opening at the Orpheum Theatre. The writing team behind the wacky musical, Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, went on to write some of Disney Animation’s most beloved songs. »

Ageism has reached a fever pitch in Hollywood, and Rose McGowan is not standing for it. In a personal essay, the actress has not only defended a fellow woman, Renée Zellweger, she's rallied against a system bent on destroying the self-esteem of women. Here's what happened. On June 30, film critic Owen Gleiberman wrote a piece for Variety titled "Renée Zellweger: If She No Longer Looks Like Herself, Has She Become a Different Actress?" In the article, Gleiberman goes on to point out how Zellweger looks "different" than she used to: "Her nose is thinner, or her lips are fuller, or her lips are thinner and her cheeks are bolder, or her forehead is younger, or maybe you can't even quite put your finger on what the difference is, but you know it's there." Gleiberman goes on to comment on how Zellweger's looks brought a certain sense of "reality" to »

Kirsty Capes on why Rose McGowan is wrong about that X-Men: Apocalypse image…

I’m sure most of the internet / Marvel fandom has seen Rose McGowan’s rant about a rather unseemly X-Men: Apocalypse promo shot over the last couple of days. If you haven’t, here’s a quick run-down of what happened:

Rose McGowan, of 90s Charmed fame and now a political activist and writer, has put Marvel and 20th Century Fox on blast this week for including this shot of Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) being strangled by bad guy Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) in their marketing material for X-Men Apocalypse:

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, McGowan said:

“There is a major problem when the men and women at 20th Century Fox think casual violence against women is the way to market a film. There is no context in the ad, just a woman getting strangled. The fact »
