Supporting Actors: The Overlooked and Underrated (part 4 of 5)

26 May 2012 7:49 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Tom Noonan as Francis Dollarhyde in Manhunter (Michael Mann, 1986, USA):

Noonan is absolutely incredible as a serial murderer in this underrated adaptation of Thomas Harris’ novel Red Dragon. With all respect to the talented but miscast actors involved in Brett Ratner’s 2002 adaptation Red Dragon (USA), with the exception of Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter, the acting in this earlier, superior version of the book exists on a much higher level. Most notably, there’s nothing resembling a comparison between Noonan’s Francis Dollarhyde and Ralph Fiennes’ interpretation. This role is by far Noonan’s finest film work to date and should not be missed.

Other notable Tom Noonan performances: Phoenix (Danny Cannon, 1998, USA).

Christopher Walken as Brad Whitewood Sr.in At Close Range (James Foley, 1986, USA):

Having once described his role in this film as “the hillbilly Lucifer”, Walken is incredible as a rural crime boss bringing his son, »

Robert Pattinson Mission: Blacklist

3 May 2012 3:59 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Robert Pattinson in Mission: Blacklist, the movie version of Us army interrogator Eric Maddox’s book of military memoirs, Mission: Black List #1: The Inside Story of the Search for Saddam Hussein — As Told by the Soldier Who Masterminded His Capture (co-written with Davin Seay). That’s the Robert Pattinson news of yesterday, when it was announced that the Twilight and Cosmopolis actor had signed on to star in the psychological thriller written by Band of BrothersErik Jendresen. Johnny Mad Dog’s Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire has been assigned to direct the project. (The Robert Pattinson news of today is that he has signed on to star in The Rover. More on that in my follow-up post.) Now, even though we’re dealing with the Us military and prisoners of war, don’t expect torture to play a role in Mission: Blacklist. Maddox claims he never tortured anyone, and has publicly »

Sean Penn in talks for 'Walter Mitty' role: Come back to the funny, Sean

25 April 2012 11:38 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

When the conversation arises about the best comic actors who’ve successfully made the leap to serious roles, the names of Tom Hanks, Robin Williams, and Bill Murray are frequently mentioned. Rarely does anyone mention Sean Penn. The two-time Oscar winner, of course, is best known for playing gritty, emotionally turbulent anti-heroes, but it’s worth noting that his breakout Hollywood role was one Jeff Spicoli, the funniest wave-craving dude from Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

And it wasn’t a fluke. Over the years, Penn has proven to be a talented comedic thesp who can get both high- and low-brow laughs. »

Another Cool Robert Pattinson/Cosmopolis Trailer

19 April 2012 1:50 AM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Robert Pattinson as Eric Packer, Cosmopolis Robert Pattinson's multibillionaire Eric Packer doesn't go on and on about wanting a haircut in this new Cosmopolis trailer — yes, another new Cosmopolis trailer. (Please scroll down.) This a more philosophical trailer, with cosmic statements such as "I smell sex all over you." Pattinson's reaction to that is priceless. And are they watching snuff films (minus the sex) at one point? [Check out another Cosmopolis trailer.] Now, this latest Cosmopolis trailer also offers a better look at the various supporting actors in the film. The English Patient / Hidden's Juliette Binoche looks particularly impressive. Cronenberg co-wrote the Cosmopolis screenplay with Don DeLillo, the author of the novel on which the film is based. In addition to Pattinson and Binoche, Cosmopolis features A Dangerous Method's Sarah Gadon, Sideways / Cinderella Man's Paul Giamatti, Sweet and Lowdown / In America's Samantha Morton, Resident Evil: Retribution / I Am Number Four's Kevin Durand, »

Awesome Cosmopolis Trailer: Robert Pattinson/David Cronenberg

18 April 2012 11:53 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Robert Pattinson in Cosmopolis "I wanna a haircut," says Robert Pattinson's multibillionaire Eric Packer — sounding like a petulant, spoiled brat with too much power and all-too-mundane needs — at the beginning of the newly released Cosmopolis trailer. (Please scroll down.) But mere human power has its limits. What will Packer become when there's "no more money" and "no more sex" and "no more power"? What would any of us become, especially if we can't get the haircut we want? [Check out another Cosmopolis trailer.] As expected, considering that this is a David Cronenberg movie, the Cosmopolis trailer looks great, Pattinson looks and sounds flawless in the role of the billionaire whose universe is about to be radically rearranged, and the (audible) dialogue sounds as weird as what one gets to hear in real life, e.g., "The logical extension of business is murder" or, again, "I wanna a haircut." No wonder the Cannes Film Festival »

Robert Pattinson in David Cronenberg Maps To The Stars?

18 April 2012 6:48 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Robert Pattinson in Cosmopolis Robert Pattinson, the star of David Cronenberg's upcoming Cosmopolis, to join the director on another project? Pattinson's fans have been abuzz on Twitter about the possibility of the actor being cast opposite Viggo Mortensen in Cronenberg's Maps to the Stars. The source for that info is an article posted at The Tracking Board, which doesn't provide any sources whatsoever. I couldn't find any other information — let alone any confirmation — that Maps to the Stars is indeed in the works. Well, apart from news from 2006, when the project was initially announced. As per The Tracking Board, Maps to the Stars tells the story of a couple of child actors ruined by Hollywood stardom. Back in 2006, Time Out described the Bruce Wagner-written film as a "dark Hollywood thriller," quoting Cronenberg as saying, "Hollywood is a world that is seductive and repellent at the same time, and »

Robert Pattinson/Cosmopolis Teaser Trailer

22 March 2012 12:41 AM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Robert Pattinson, Cosmopolis "I'm looking for more," we hear Robert Pattinson's character, the billionaire Eric Packer, say at the beginning of the just-released Cosmopolis teaser trailer. "Click the switch." (Please scroll down for the trailer.) After the lights are turned on, we get to see a scantily (un)clad woman pointing a gun, as a naked Robert Pattinson ("private parts" in the shade) tells her: "Show me something I don't know." Guns go off. David Cronenberg directed Cosmopolis and also co-wrote the screenplay with Don DeLillo, author of the novel on which the film is based. A highly likely Cannes Film Festival entry, in addition to Pattinson Cosmopolis also features A Dangerous Method's Sarah Gadon, The English Patient / Hidden's Juliette Binoche, Sideways / Cinderella Man's Paul Giamatti, Sweet and Lowdown / In America's Samantha Morton, Real Steel's Kevin Durand, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly's Mathieu Amalric, »

Robert Pattinson as Eric Packer, Cosmopolis Starring Robert Pattinson as a billionaire New Yorker experiencing a highly unusual day, David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis will likely open in the Us some time this year. Cannes Film Festival buzz keeps getting stronger and now producing company Alfama Films has announced that the Cosmopolis teaser trailer comes out tomorrow, Thursday, "in the morning." Considering that the site is French, I'm assuming that they're referring to "morning" in Western Europe, which would mean late night (tonight) in the Americas. [Watch Cosmopolis teaser trailer.] The Cosmopolis teaser will come out in two versions, French-language and English-language with French subtitles. And it'll be released on two sites: Allocine and wat.tv. I should add that Cosmopolis opens in France on May 23 and in Portugal on May 31. Bel Ami UK DVD/Blu-ray: Robert Pattinson/Robert Pattison

Bel Ami Blu-ray: Robert Pattinson is "Robert Pattison" Bel Ami, starring Robert Pattinson, Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Christina Ricci comes out on DVD/Blu-ray in the United Kingdom on July 23 as per Amazon.com. That's good news for Pattinson, Thurman, Scott Thomas, and Ricci fans, but as belamifilm.com has pointed out, there's one glitch: Robert Pattinson is billed as "Robert Pattison" on the DVD cover. We've made that mistake before; our excuse is that we have a — to put it mildly — skeleton editorial staff. For now, it's unclear whether or not DVD distributor StudioCanal will correct the typo. In the United States, Bel Ami will be available on VOD on May 4. Magnolia Pictures will distribute the period comedy-drama in Us theaters on June 8. Even though it had already had special screenings in various Belgian cities, the film had its official World Premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in February. »

Best Movies Of 2011 – Lominac’s View

12 March 2012 1:47 PM, PDT | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

Just to add even more to the barrage of Best you’ve certainly received already, we have another version for you. Catch my list here, if you haven’t already.

Every year around this time we get the barrage of “top ten” lists, and every year around this time I feel out of the loop. Not having the privilege of living in the vicinity of a major metropolitan area, many of the critics’ favorite films of the “year” do not actually see the light of day in my part of the country until well after the new year, leaving me to play catch up about a month or so later.

Unfortunately, this is yet again the case in 2011, subsequently seriously handicapping my own formation of any “best of” list in a timely manner. Despite this set back, the change over from one year to the next is an irresistibly retrospective wellspring, »

Robert Pattinson, David Cronenberg Cosmopolis star Robert Pattinson and the film's director, David Cronenberg, are seen above with an unidentified man at the Cosmopolis wrap-up party. Shot last spring/summer in Toronto, rumor has it that Cronenberg's latest will be included in the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. If so, Twihaters will likely suffer a coronary, as there's an equally good chance that Walter Salles' On the Road, starring Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, and Pattinson's Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart, will be selected as well. Cosmopolisfilm.com has many more pictures of the Cosmopolis wrap-up party at the Toronto pub Charlie's Gallery. They also have information on the release dates of Cosmopolis in three countries — Australia (Aug. 30), Brazil (Aug. 17), and Italy (Dec. 12) — in addition to links to the distributors' sites. 'Radio Days' 25th Anniversary: 25 Things You Didn't Know About Woody Allen's Nostalgic Classic

30 January 2012 1:20 PM, PST | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

With "Midnight in Paris," Woody Allen's comic look at nostalgia and its limitations, having earned four Oscar nominations last week (including nods for Best Picture, Allen's direction and his original screenplay), it's a good time to take a look back at Allen's 1987 comedy "Radio Days." Another comic take on nostalgia, "Radio Days" is now officially a golden oldie itself, having been released exactly 25 years ago, on January 30, 1987. A fond look, filtered through memory, of a 1940s New York childhood, the radio broadcasts that captivated audiences back then, and the behind-the-scenes gossip about the performers who voiced them, "Radio Days" may be best known today for launching the career of Seth Green -- then a 12-year-old who played the Allen-like narrator as a boy. But there's also a wealth of little-known true stories behind the film, some of them from Allen's own life, some from classic radio lore, and some »

Woody Allen Career Retrospective Part 3: From Murder to Midnight

13 January 2012 1:53 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

In 1993, whilst under heavy fire from the media regarding his split with Farrow and in the middle of a nasty custody battle over custody of their children, Woody Allen released yet another movie. “Manhattan Murder Mystery” is a light hearted romp that reunites him with Diane Keaton in a role originally intended for Farrow. Keaton and Allen play a high class married couple who accidentally stumble upon what they believe to be a murder. Co-Starring Alan Alda and Angelica Huston the movie is fun, frivolous watch which showed that the on screen chemistry between Allen and Keaton was still there after all those years. It also proved that regardless of what was happening in his personal life Woody Allen was still an accomplished and extremely focused film director. He escaped from the pressures of reality by immersing himself in even more work.

In 94 he directed “Don’t Drink the Water »
