Watch: Ethan Hawke Finds Shakespeare Again in 'Cymbeline' Trailer

29 November 2013 10:04 AM, PST | | See recent news »

Like Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet, director Michael Almereyda (of The Eternal, Hamlet previously) is taking on a contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare's lesser known Cymbeline. After directing Ethan Hawke in a similar style adaptation of Hamlet, Almereyda reteams with the Training Day star to amp up the tale of Romans and Celtics going head to head, this time with the aid of automatic weapons, explosions and a gritty cast of characters played by Ed Harris, Milla Jovovich, Anton Yelchin, Dakota Johnson. Benaroya Pictures describes the film in the vein of "Sons of Anarchy" and this first trailer supports that. Here's the first trailer for Michael Almereyda's Cymbeline from Ontd (via The Playlist): Cymbeline is directed by Michael Almereyda (Hamlet), based on William Shakespeare's original text. Ethan Hawke (Training Day, The Purge) stars in the film which unfolds as an epic battle between dirty cops and a drug »

Ethan Hawke Starring in Shakespeare’s ‘Cymbeline’ Movie

31 July 2013 9:46 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Ethan Hawke will star in Michael Almereyda’s modern day adaption of Wiliam Shakespeare’s play “Cymbeline,” with production starting Aug. 19 in New York City.

Producers are Anthony Katagas for Keep Your Head Productions and Michael Benaroya, who will fully finance through his banner Benaroya Pictures. Ben Sachs of Benaroya Pictures will exec produce.

International Film Trust, Benaroya’s foreign sales arm, will handle international rights.

The film will portray a battle between dirty cops and a drug dealing biker gang set in a corruption-riddled 21st century America. Shakespeare’s play centered on the daughter of the British king Cymbeline, who discovers she has secretly married a man raised in her father’s court, resulting in his banishment from the court.

“Cymbeline” will re-team Almereyda with Hawke more than a decade after their collaboration on “Hamlet” in 2000. Almereyda’s other credits include “Trance,” “New Orleans, Mon Amour” and “Nadja.”
