Storyline

The people of New York have been burying their unknown dead on Hart Island since 1869. Now real estate tycoon Rupert King wants to build what he calls "Hope City", supposedly to help the poor and homeless of the city "get a leg up", on this same island, with no thought of the current million or so "residents". Accompanied by a New York cop looking for a missing girl's body and some reluctant employees of the Department of Corrections, King makes his way to the island for the ground-breaking ceremony. But when his personal assistant goes missing, and night falls on the island, dark secrets are revealed, not only about the island itself, but King's "noble" plans for it as well. And the island's residents, with their souls in the form of countless and lethal flies, have no intention of being ignored. Written by EllenRipley112

X-Flies
30 January 2003 | by (Haddonfield, IL) – See all my reviews

Considering how badly this movie was received, I was expecting far worse than I got when I put this one in the DVD player. Yes, it wasn't a great movie, but it wasn't a terrible one, either.

The problem with this seems to be the fact that the idea is more than a little half-baked, like a half-hour episode of the "X-Files" drawn out to 90 minutes. The plot concerns a disparate group of people who end up stalked by killer flies on an island used to bury the unclaimed dead of New York City. A bite from one of the flies causes the victim to rot in a matter of hours (or minutes, depending on what the plot requires). The flies seem to be intelligent and selective in who they bite, and they go through periods where they lay dormant and then suddenly launch into attack, a lot like the title villains of "The Birds".

The idea is intriguing, but the difficulty lies in the execution. We never really get a sense of what the threat is here. Surely an unexplained attack of flies could be believable in a "Birds" kind of way, but what's with the sudden decomposition of the victims? A little more explanation would have made the movie a lot more enjoyable. It seems unsure of its own rules, and the conclusion comes off as a real cheat especially.

The cast is surprisingly adequate, considering the material. Talisa Soto builds a little depth to her character, and Malcolm McDowell (apparently paying off a credit card or two with this picture) does a great turn in the typical greedy rich man role. Even the characters who usually come off as annoying in these kinds of movies, i.e. the fly fodder, are interesting in a superficial way, and Mos Def and Kent McQuaid generate some quirky characterizations.

By the time the credits roll, however, it has all amounted to very little. There was potential here for some real tension, but it seems like the filmmakers tried too hard to avoid the cliches of the genre they were working within. It's too bad they couldn't decide whether they wanted visceral impact or foreboding atmosphere, because neither element was used to a great effect in this movie, and it felt like a big buildup without a payoff. Still, it's not bad for late-night viewing, and the actors keep it from getting too boring.
